Going into my fourth term at TC, I want to share how I prepare for a new semester!

The first thing I do is create and go over my schedule. I am balancing classes, my work-study position, and a TA position this spring. I took some time over break to put everything into my calendar to get a good overview for the whole semester, and I can easily access it from my phone, iPad, and laptop. I have weekly meetings for work, a few classes that meet every other week, and independent studio hours that I set for myself. I also make sure I block out time for the gym and any trips/plans with friends I know about before the semester starts.

Next, I check Canvas for when classes are available so I can read over the syllabi and determine if I need to order any books. Many of my classes provide the readings in PDF format on Canvas, but sometimes, there are supplemental readings or movies that we need to access throughout the term. I like to create a master document for the semester of all the due dates that I know — this helps me track my assignments and understand what to expect for the coming weeks or months.

I like to come back to NYC a few days before the semester starts to ensure I have time to go grocery shopping, unpack from break, and get settled back into the swing of things. I find it helps set me up for success when I allow a few days to get organized.

Overall, I make sure to go into each semester with a fresh, positive attitude! Every semester is different, and you have to spend the first week or two finding that balance between classes, work, and social life. Make sure you plan time to spend with friends, explore a new part of the city, study at different libraries, and go on walks when the weather is nice!

Enjoy your classes, and have a great spring term!
