Are you getting ready to start your journey at Teachers College? We’ve compiled some advice from our alumni about how to make the most of the resources, events, and communities that are offered at TC.
Greg Montgomery, Computing in Education: Distance Learning
“You’re going to be among so many talented people in your classes. Take advantage of that. Try to get to know your classmates, and you can certainly do that remotely. Try to form relationships with your professors; they can be really helpful with your work even after you leave.”
Joanne Choi, Teaching of English
“Actively network with classmates and professors as well as get involved in the many extracurricular opportunities at TC. When I first started attending TC, I believed that I would focus primarily on academic coursework but soon discovered that there was an extremely rich student life with many opportunities to get involved.”
Samantha Alcalá, Sociology in Education
“Explore all of the possibilities. Let yourself take a class that you might not initially consider, go to an event and learn something new. Maybe sit in the library and have a conversation with someone. Just explore, however exploration looks for you. There is so much to do and so many people to connect with, and so many fascinating stories and wisdom in this space from everyone.”
Julie Zhu, Economics and Education
“Explore the career services website; take the initiative to reach out to alumni. Make friends, enjoy your time at TC, expand your network, just try to make the best use of the resources that you have at TC.”
John E. Williams, Higher and Postsecondary Education
“Every week there was something going on at TC. There is no short supply of free food, free t-shirts — I still have a cup from the Taste of Harlem. What you get from TC is valuable, you can see the tuition dollars in use, you can see the Student Affairs and the service fees in use. One of the first things that I did when I became a student was visit museums because you can go for free or cheap. So take advantage of all of these things.”
