Date and time:

Topic: Teaching Chinese at Upper Levels: Philological Knowledge and Teaching Skills
This workshop is designed for the Chinese teachers who teach the language at upper levels (3rd year and above). The organizer of the workshop believes that the quality of instruction of Chinese at upper levels, to a great extent, lies in the quality of the texts that instructors choose or write for the courses. Then, how to choose the texts of high quality and guide students to go through them and learn the meaningful expressions? The instructors must have good taste in reading and outstanding knowledge of Chinese philology. To develop such taste and knowledge, the workshop will select four Chinese texts, two in Classical Chinese, two in modern Chinese, and lead participants to do a close reading and texts analysis. We will specifically identify the linguistic features of different registers, reveal the source and evaluation of idiomatic expressions, build the bridge between linguistics and rhetoric, etc.
