Treatment Study: Comparing the effectiveness of traditional semantic feature analysis (SFA) versus SFA plus metacognitive strategy training (SFA+MST) for people with acquired aphasia

We are recruiting people with acquired aphasia for a treatment study aimed to improve the effectiveness of a behavioral treatment used with people with aphasia, called Semantic Feature Analysis (SFA) treatment. We want to know whether modifications to the SFA protocol lead to better outcomes compared to outcomes following the traditional SFA protocol. Some people will complete traditional SFA and some people will complete a modified version of SFA.

Who Is This Study For? People with acquired aphasia (e.g., from a stroke, traumatic brain injury, etc.)

What Will I Need To Do To Participate? You will complete assessments of language and communication—and if you qualify, free aphasia treatment.

What Is the Expected Time Commitment? The entire study will take about six months. Participating in this study will require you to come to our laboratory several times for assessments and at least once per week during the treatment phase. Other study visits can occur in-person or virtually (Zoom). Each visit will be about 60-90 minutes in length.

Will I Be Paid? If you are eligible to participate, you may receive up to $125 for your participation for the entire study.

Evaluating the relationships between naming accuracy, circumlocution, and connected speech production in people with chronic aphasia

This project aims to evaluate the relationship between successful target retrieval and circumlocution attempts during a naming assessment with connected speech informativeness during two different connected speech tasks. Conceptually, this study is a partial replication of prior work (Tilton-Bolowsky et al., 2023). We predict that the original findings will be reproduced in this study, which will lend further evidence of a meaningful relationship between circumlocution and connected speech. Projected completion date: May 2025.

Measuring changes in circumlocution content before and after Semantic Feature Analysis + Metacognitive Strategy Training treatment
