NEW for 2018-2019 academic year: International Researchers Language Program!

The AL/TESOL Community Language Program at Teachers College is offering two 8-week hybrid courses for the third semester in summer 2019:

  • Academic Culture and Communication for International Researchers 
  • Academic Research Writing for International Researchers [FULL/CLOSED]

These courses are designed to assist international scholars and researchers to advance their academic communication and research skills and facilitate their adjustments to the academic culture in the USA. 

*Visiting scholars and post-doctoral researchers with a confirmed status, as well as international faculty and staff conducting research, are eligible to attend the Program.*

Course Information

Academic Research Writing for International Researchers

This course will guide you in the process of: 

  • Recognizing and employing strategies for effectively synthesizing and critiquing prior literature in their field;
  • Identifying, analyzing, and practicing use of language features characteristic of research writing for academic audiences;
  • Identifying, analyzing, and practicing use of discipline- and genre-specific rhetorical conventions in research writing for academic audiences;
  • Recognizing and employing strategies and techniques for effective editing;
  • Applying this knowledge to their own current research writing.

Course Duration: May 6 - June 24, 2019 (8-week hybrid)

In-person class day: Every Monday, 11am - 1pm, *class will be on Tuesday, May 28 due to Memorial Day holiday*

Cost: $450

Expected Workload: 5-8 hours/week

 

Academic Culture and Communication for International Researchers

This course will guide you in the process of:

  • Examining the values of North American academic culture, including values of collaboration, individuality, and critical inquiry;
  • Exploring the norms and practices of the academic community, including norms for social engagement and academic integrity;
  • Interacting with colleagues and faculty in formal and informal academic settings;
  • Participating in and facilitating online and in-class academic discussions;
  • Preparing and delivering effective academic presentations and navigating post-presentation Q&A sessions.

Course Duration: May 6* - June 27, 2019 (8-week hybrid) *Online coursework begins May 6 and in-person meetings begin May 9.

In-person class day: Every Thursday, 11am - 1pm

Cost: $450

Expected Workload: 5-8 hours/week
