National Professional Development Grant Awarded

In September 2017, Dr. Hammer and her colleagues, Dr. Barbara Wasik and Dr. Annemarie Hindman from Temple University, were awarded a $2.68 million National Professional Development grant from the US Department of Education’s Office of English Language Acquisition.

The grant, entitled Early Language and Literacy Professional Development for Teachers of English Learners, will train teachers and assistant teachers working in the NYC DOE to use ExCELL (Exceptional Coaching for Early Language and Literacy). ExCELL is the research team’s professional development (PD) program that combines web-based training and remote coaching to train teachers and assistant teachers to use high quality language and literacy practices in their classrooms.  The grant will also test the efficacy of the PD through a randomized control trial. The ultimate goal of the grant is to improve the school readiness of children who are from low-income homes and who speak a language other than English at home.
