A Growing Need
As public school systems across the country work to support migrant students, TC prepares specialized teachers ready to meet their needs. Vivian Lindharsen, Senior Lecturer of Applied Linguistics & TESOL points out that unprepared teachers may “struggle to adapt to the constantly changing needs in their classroom.” TC-educated teachers are trained to adapt.

Practice What You Learn
Our students have the opportunity to take what they are learning in the classroom and apply it to the real world. Students on the certification track are placed in NYC schools as a part of our student teaching program, with 6-12 hours/week spent in a classroom setting. MA students can also participate in the Community Language Program right here at TC, where they get hands-on experience in teaching, curriculum development, and assessment through teaching TESOL classes for adult learners.

Access To Resources
Reaching beyond the classroom, the programs in Applied Linguistics & TESOL offer a multitude of resources to connect with professionals in the field. The program hosts multiple conferences a year right at TC, attended by professionals from across the world. From small classes and close connections with faculty to research opportunities at TC’s in-house journal, students gain a solid academic foundation. Columbia also provides access to 19 libraries and some of the premiere faculty in the world.

Programs Rooted in Social Justice
Language learning and use are intrinsically linked to inclusion, equity, and justice. TC grads are culturally-responsive, focusing on student’s assets. Sarah Creider, a Lecturer in the Applied Linguistics & TESOL program, notes that supporting “learners from a variety of linguistic backgrounds…to navigate the school system and language learning process — that’s what our teachers are prepared to do.”
