Art is always of today, an object or experience that slips around, changes and has endured in a multitude of forms across the millennia as humans have sought to make symbolic meaning out of the relationships to their worlds. Art can be unnerving, compelling, political, lyric and full of fury, compassion and hope and, according to its time. It can also be beautiful. Today, Art exists a long continuum, from the outer reaches of technology. Art is made by artists, bought and sold and exhibited in museums and galleries and art fairs; it is also made by everyone else: by children, immigrant communities, on the street, and in senior citizen residencies. The Art and Art Education Program at Teachers College has, since its inception, been a full player in this mix being sensitive to the shifting cultural and social contexts that have surrounded personal and community practices of making.
This exhibition here in our Macy Art Gallery traces in three large capsules how ART TODAY endures in the work we do at TC, in a complex interweaving of artistic-aesthetic-pedagogical threads and commitments of our faculty and the students who come to make art with us.
