Joins us for a conversation with Professor Sigal ben-Porath, Professor of Education, Philosophy and Political Science at theUniversity of Pennsylvania.

Colleges and universities continue to grapple with difficult dialogues, valuing free speech and
condemning hate speech that rise to the level of harassment, threats, or that create a hostile
environment for vulnerable students.

Professor Ben- Porath’s book, Free Speech on Campus, offers a suggested framework for
thinking about free-speech controversies both inside and outside the college classroom. She
examines how these conflicts come about and considers the place of identity politics and the
concern of safety within them. Her work provides strategies to de-escalate tensions and
negotiate highly charged debates surrounding trigger warnings, safe spaces, and speech that
verges on hate.
