Faculty Awards & Honors 2014-2015

The impact of TC’s extraordinary faculty is evident in the leadership they bring to professional organizations and learned societies and the recognition they receive for career achievement and distinguished scholarship.

During academic year 2014/15 alone: 

  • John Allegrante, Professor of Health Education, was elected a Fellow of the Society of Behavioral Medicine in recognition of outstanding contributions to the advancement of the science and practice of behavioral medicine. Dr. Allegrante also awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Humane Letters from the State University of New York, in May.

  • Ryan Baker, Associate Professor of Cognitive Studies, received the Attendee Choice Award for Most Original Research at the 10th Annual Games+Learning+Society Conference Poster Session, 2014. Dr. Baker also was awarded Best Technical Paper at the 5th International Learning Analytics and Knowledgeable Conference; received Honorable Mention for Best Paper at the 2015 International Conference on Intelligent User Interfaces; and won the Best Paper Award at the 17th International Conference on Artificial Intelligence in Education.

  • Jeanne Brooks-Gunn, Virginia & Leonard Marx Professor of Child Development & Education, was awarded the Matilda White Riley Award by the Office of Behavioral and Social Sciences Research (OBSSR) at the National Institutes of Health. The Award honors individuals whose research has contributed to behavioral and social scientific knowledge and/or the application of such knowledge relevant to the mission of the NIH.

  • Judith Burton, Professor of Art & Art Education, was selected by theNational Art Education Association to receive the Eisner Lifetime Achievement Award.

  • Corbin Campbell, Assistant Professor of Higher Education, was awarded a National Academy of Education/Spencer Foundation postdoctoral fellowship for her research project, entitled, “Assessing College Educational Quality: An Inside View of Teaching Quality and Academic Rigor in U.S. College and University Classrooms.” Dr. Campbell was also appointed to the Editorial Board of Review of Higher Education.

  • Joseph Ciccolo, Assistant Professor of Applied Physiology, became a member of the Editorial Board for American Journal of Lifestyle Medicine.

  • Peter Coleman, Professor of Psychology & Education, was named the 2015 recipient of the Morton Deutsch Conflict Resolution Award by the American Psychological Association.

  • Kevin Dougherty, Associate Professor of Higher Education & Education Policy, was selected for a Fulbright U.S. Scholar grant to do research at Birkbeck College, University of London, in spring 2016.

  • Noah D. Drezner, Associate Professor of Higher Education, received the John Grenzebach Award for Outstanding Research in Philanthropy for Educational Advancement from the Council for Advancement and Support of Education. (CASE). Dr. Drezner was also named to serve as this year’s presenter of the Barbara Townsend Endowed Lecture at the annual meeting of the Association for the Study of Higher Education in November 2015. 

  • Steven Dubin, Professor of Arts Administration was awarded a residency at the Rockefeller Foundation's Study Center in Bellagio, Italy.

  • Lisa Edmonds, Associate Professor in Communications Sciences & Disorders, was the International Keynote at the British Aphasiology Conference in London in September 2015.

  • Ansley Erickson, Assistant Professor of History & Education, was appointed to the editorial board of the History of Education Quarterly beginning January 2015.

  • Carol Ewing Garber, Professor of Movement Sciences, was elected an Active Fellow in the National Academy of Kinesiology.

  •  William Gaudelli, Associate Professor of Social Studies & Education, was named a Research Fellow of the Centre for Governance and Citizenship at The Hong Kong Institute of Education.

  • A. Lin Goodwin, Evenden Professor of Education and Vice Dean, was selected as the 2015 recipient of the Distinguished Scholar Award by the Research on the Education of Asian Pacific Americans SIG of the American Educational Research Association. Dr. Goodwinwas also elected by the National Institute of Education to the first Dr. Ruth Wong Hie King Teacher Education Professorship in honor of a pioneer in teacher education in Singapore.

  • Andrew Gordon, Professor of Movement Sciences, was the keynote speaker at the September 2014 American Academy of Cerebral Palsy and Developmental Medicine, San Diego, CA. Dr. Gordon was also the keynote speaker at the July 2014 Early Detection and Early Neurorehabilitation in Cerebral Palsy Workshop, Vienna, Austria, and delivered an invited talk on State-of-the-Science and Treatment Decisions in Cerebral Palsy, directing research priorities at the National Institutes of Healthin November 2014.

  • Jeffrey Henig, Professor of Political Science & Education, received the Norton Long Career Achievement Award, awarded by the Urban Politics Section of the American Political Science Association

  • Matthew Johnson, Associate Professor of Statistics & Education, was selected as co-Program Chair of the 2016 National Council on Measurement in Education (NCME) annual meeting.

  • Michelle Knight, Professor of Education, was selected as a Senior Research Fellow for the Massachusetts Institute for College and Career Readiness (MICCR).  

  • Jennifer C. Lena, Associate Professor of Arts Administration, was appointed to the editorial board of Contemporary Sociology. Dr. Lena will also be one of the series editors of Culture and Economic Life published by Stanford University Press, and she was also elected the American Sociological Association’s new Chair for the Sociology of Culture Section.

  • Henry M. Levin, William Heard Kilpatrick Professor of Economics & Education, has been named the first foreign recipient of the “Outstanding Contribution to Chinese Education Research Award” by the Ming Yuan Education Foundation. Levin has been teaching in China and working on Chinese education since 1988.

  • Xiaodong Lin, Associate Professor of Cognitive Studies, became the Yellow River Endowed Professor and Scholar at Henan Province and Henan University, Kaifeng, China. She also became the Zi Jiang Endowed Chair Professor and Scholar at Shanghai Zi Jiang Corporate Foundation, Shanghai, China. Dr. Lin also received the Endowed Distinguished Professor award from Beijing Normal University.

  • Terrence E. Maltbia, Associate Professor of Practice in TC’s Department of Organization & Leadership, was recognized by the New York City chapter of the International Coach Federation as their September 2015 Coach of the Month.  

  • Felicia Mensah, Professor of Science & Education, was conference organizer and invited panel moderator for “Furthering Girls’ Math Identity: An Expert Convening” conference this past June in Washington, DC.

  • Janet L. Miller, Professor of English Education, delivered a Keynote Address, "Expanding Possibilities: Honoring Maxine Greene's Influences on Curriculum Theorizing," at the 35th Annual Bergamo Conference on Curriculum Theory and Classroom Practice, October 2014. Dr. Miller also was named to receive the Mary Anne Raywid Award from the Society of Professors of Education, an affiliate of AERA and founded by John Dewey.

  • Ernest Morrell, Macy Professor of Education, received the 2014 "Outstanding Academic Title" award by Choice Magazine, a publication of the American Library Association for his book Critical Media Pedagogy.  Dr. Morrell also delivered the Harvard Graduate School of Education Dean’s Distinguished Lecture entitled “Critical media pedagogy: teaching for achievement in city schools” and was approved for a three-year term appointment (by the Board of Directors of ILA) as member of the Literacy Research Panel.

  • Anna Neumann, Professor of Higher Education, was appointed to a two-year term on the Midcareer Grant Program Review Panel of the Spencer Foundation.

  • Kathleen O’Connell, Isabel Maitland Stewart Professor of Nursing Education, received the Outstanding Career Achievement Award at the College of Mount St. Joseph Alumni Association on June 7, 2014.

  • Speaking at at the California TESOL and Louisiana TESOL annual conventions, Luciana de Oliveira, now an Associate Professor at the University of Miami School of Education and Human Development, delivered two plenary presentations focused on the Common Core State Standards and English language learners.

  • In honor of William Pasmore, Professor of Practice of Social & Organizational Psychology, and his colleague Dick Woodman from Texas A&M University, the Academy of Management Organization and Development division now gives an award annually named the “Pasmore-Woodman award” to recognize scholars who have made substantial contributions to the field as a result of their sustained collaboration. The first such award was given out in Vancouver this past August.

  • Detra Price-Dennis,  Assistant Professor of Elementary & Inclusive Education, received the 2014 Janet Emig Award for Exemplary Scholarship for her article, “Urban Fiction and Multicultural Literature as Transformative Tools for Preparing English Teachers for Diverse Classrooms,” co-authored with Marcelle Haddix, Syracuse University, Syracuse, New York, and published in English Education

  • Sonali Rajan, Assistant Professor of Health Education, received TC’s Strage Junior Faculty Prize for 2015.

  • Douglas Ready, Associate Professor of Education & Public Policy, was chosen as an Outstanding Reviewer for 2014 for Educational Evaluation and Policy Analysis (EEPA)

  • Derald Wing Sue, Professor of Psychology & Education, was awarded the American Psychological Foundation APF 2015 Gold Medal for Life Achievement in Psychology in the Public Interest at the American Psychological Association Convention in Toronto, Canada.

  • Erica Walker, Professor of Mathematics & Education, delivered the Etta Z. Falconer Lecture at the annual meeting of the Mathematical Association of America (MAA) in Washington, D.C. This year’s meeting celebrated the 100th anniversary of MAA’s founding. 

  • Priscilla Wohlstetter, Distinguished Research Professor, became the co-chair of the newly formed AERA SIG, Charters & School Choice.
