Faculty Appreciation

Dear TC Community,

Last week marked the first-ever TC Faculty Appreciation Week. Our goal was to spotlight the TC community’s appreciation for the kindness, care and support that faculty members have offered our students, our staff and administration, and one other.

Below are more than 140 tributes to faculty--testimonials from members of the TC community gathered over the course of a single week. (You can still post a comment below.) We hope they will inspire us all to be ever more mindful, caring, and supportive of one another.

With much gratitude,

The 2018-19 Faculty Development and Advisory Committee (FDAC)

Faculty Appreciation

Faculty in C&T have been very supportive in general, but I want to highlight my outstanding colleagues and friends in the Professional Cert program: Jackie Simmons, Nancy Lesko, and Dirck Roosevelt. Jackie: you are awesome. I really appreciate how you call me out when needed, always with extreme generosity. Nancy: you are the scholar/mentor I aspire to be. Dirck: you are always there when i need to vent or brainstorm, always open to new ideas. Thank you all. Without you, I wouldn't be here.

This year I have had the pleasure to develop some new relationships and friendships with a group of TEPC Faculty in the creation of the New Teacher Fellowship. This is an interdisciplinary inquiry group focused on the reasons why teacher preparation matters so much here at TC! I appreciate Kelly Parkes, Amanda Mazin, Nancy Sall, Maria Hartman, Sasha Gribovskaya, Clarice Sng, Katie Ledwell and Felicia Mensah and the entire team of doctoral students and TC grads for the new opportunity to learn together! These opportunities make me love TC! #TCFaculty4Us

Professor Hanson — I wanted to write this card to thank you from the bottom of my heart for being a wonderful teacher and allowing me to be a part of such exciting project! I feel so lucky that I was able to take your case study class and learn so much from you as well as from fellow students. Now I can proudly say that how I view creativity is totally different from what it used to be before taking your class. I already see myself as a more critical and deep thinker thanks to your gentle, encouraging yet sharp instructions and feedback. As I embark on a new journal in the field of clinical psychology, I will always have the participatory framework and lens I’ve developed here.
Anonymous
Professor DeRose — I wanted to take this opportunity to thank you from the bottom of my heart for being the best advisor and guiding my academic and professional journey throughout the program. I feel so lucky I was able to take three classes with you during my time here, especially the research practicum class that really shaped my research interest and helped me grow as a graduate student. Thank you for writing many recommendation letters for my doctoral application — I already heard back from a few schools and hopefully will have decided on one when you receive this card. Rachel Rothman & Christine Holley — You have both helped me envision what amazing places 4K can be and ways to move forward with my staff. I have read lots of the 4K literature but I just had trouble seeing how to really transform the work into practice — especially with a teacher who is hesitant to change (for a multitude of reasons, but likely from vision as well). Not only the content but also the methods of PD will be directly translated into next steps. I hope to send pictures and stories of the great work to come (especially of my daughter who will be in that 4K classroom next year!)

Dr.DeRose has truly gone above and beyond with not only teaching, but as a MA advisor. She is so intelligent and always open to talk about research ideas and development of children. She makes me eager to go to class. This is the first time where I never want a class to end. She is fascinating and does an amazing job. Thank you for being so kind, sharing your knowledge, and being a inspiration to us all.

Dear. Dr. Hope and Yorks Every time I think back of my TC life, I am speechless when both of my advisors come up in my head. It is true that without your tremendous also thoughtful supports and meaningful comment on my work I would not be able to be here as an EdD student. Moreover, every time you remind me of the unintended consequences of education which would be the most powerful tool to transform people with strategic insight. Additionally, you are the living example of every step that I admire and want to follow. Thanks for everything and I will be a better person than today following your lessons.

Professor Paulo Blikstein has watched me grow from a crazy undergrad to a crazier graduate student! Throwback to a couple of years ago when he signed my undergrad thesis form, and I thought it was the end of my research, but really it was just the beginning that led me on to pursue it at doctoral level.

Dr. Thanos Patelis has been of deep importance to the development of my understanding of multiple regression and applied statistical analyses. Professor Susan Bodnar, I appreciate your whole heart that is carried through the material that you teach. I get the impression that you do not hold onto judgements. That they may be important, but it doesn't perturb your fearless attitude about getting to know people. And, I mean PEOPLE of ALL sorts. Something about you refreshes and that gives me hope. Your class was imbued with hope that we can learn and come to understand each other. The world is not so far way and as grim and it can feel when there is darkness. We give the world hope, through giving each other of our charity. Thank you for offering your understandings and instructions.

The faculty in the Health and Behavior Studies Department are the best! I attest to their high standards of humanity, care and dignity. I have worked with them for many years as a staff member. Respect, understanding and utmost considerations are shown me in great measure. Determined to raise highly intellectual children into successful adults was of utmost importance and paramount for me while working at TC. I was able to accomplish this goal at Teachers College - in part due to HBS' faculty. The faculty’s insights, and my faith, played a critical role in the cognitive, social, and emotional development of my children. Indeed, it takes a village to raise children. HBS’ faculty has been supportive of my family and me. Their wisdom surrounding education, health, and psychology was a valuable part of my village during my children’s formative, adolescent and early adulthood years. Thank you HBS' faculty!
Marsha Streeter

You always ask, "How you doing" when I come into your office, and you really mean it. When people ask me what is great about TC faculty, I simply tell them a story about you... The belief that my educators at TC have had in me has been the most phenomenal thing. They have and still do at times believe in me more than I believe in myself and it pushes me to be as great as they see me. I would not be able to outline the career I want for me without them. I would not have made it to my last semester while pregnant and with an infant without them. Thank you, Judy, Zhen Zhen, Jaymes, Erin, Jordan, and Sandra

Professor Erica Walker - Your patience is beyond all understanding. During this doctoral journey, you have encouraged me to slow down and embrace the experience. Although at times the role of a doctoral student becomes challenging, you continue to provide the appropriate amount of support that is needed for me to continue on. I can not thank you enough for everything that you have done. I have learned so much from you, and I am honored to have you as my advisor.

Dr. Lisa Wright -- I want to thank you for your compassion, your wisdom, and your selfless, tireless work. I am forever grateful for your support and mentorship. You once asked us: "what is your superpower?" and you challenged us to think deeply about our strengths. That conversation has never left my mind. I still reflect on this question, and it helps remind me of my worth. You said that your superpower was "opening doors" for others. In the years that I have known you, I have seen your power shine again and again; in your work with students, with faculty and staff, and with the Hollingworth Center, you have opened so many doors. Thank you for sharing your superpower, and challenging us to find the power within ourselves.

Dr. Buontempo -- We can think of no better qualified or encouraging leader to carry on the ELDP torch than you. Taking a hodge-podge of generally single-tracked military minds like ours & promoting reflection, how to “play-nice-with-others” & help us reach new developmental milestones is a fantastic feat. thank you for what you do & continue to do.

Dr. Burke -- I had a profound thought the other day whilst pontificating over self-awareness and 360-degree feedback from a plethora of sources. The degree of agility and cognitive complexity is only matched by one’s ability to admonish elaborate and interconnected phrases. In conclusion, while I have learned a great deal through your instruction, I will always value your style & lessons you have taught us well. Much appreciated.

Professor Ruth Vinz - I express deep appreciation for all you do to nurture me as scholar, teacher, researcher, and writer. I have learned so much about the art of teaching and advising from you! Thank you for mentoring me. I promise to play it forward to the next generation.

Adele Bruni-Ashley — You are a rainbow that bridges the students, faculty, and supervisors of our department. Thank you for your wealth of wisdom, unrelenting energy, and the cosmic kindness that you share with us all.

John Handal — In an effort to demonstrate the positive impact you have had on me, and I imagine the ELDP cohort and program as a whole, i can only say I wish we could clone you. From day 1 your ability to manage a complex course synchronization, fielding off-the-wall questions from confused Army officers in this foreign environment, and overall personality of generosity and warm welcomes have been critical in our transition that have allowed us to maximize this opportunity. Thank you for the example you set and support you provide.

Dear Dr. Karen Froud, You are an incredible professor! You somehow manage to give wonderful feedback and criticism but not make anyone feel judged or discouraged at the same time. Your feedback has absolutely made me a better writer and you are always available and responsive. I have enjoyed your courses and have learned a great amount from you (about all sorts of things - from neuroscience to philosophy). Thank you for setting an excellent example for other women in science.

Dr. Alisha Holland, you're one of the most phenomenal professors I have had. I have truly become a better writer because of you. You've taught me to think critically, ask valid questions, and verbalize/write those thoughts logically. You also make class so interactive, that I've learned the information at a much deeper level than I would have otherwise. I can't forget to thank you for always being so kind and warm. You're a total joy to be around and you're truly amazing! Thank you for all that you do.

Dear Professor Vinz, Thank you for believing in my ability to teach the children of New York City and for the opportunity to work with and be mentored by some of the best educators I’ve ever known in the English Education Program. I am eternally grateful for all that was poured into me. Many blessings. Theresa Stephens

How much room we have here for commenting because it may be long... I have done this last year at thanksgiving and will continue doing as far as I can remember but I have had the an amazing, inspiring, personally challenging experience throughout XMA where besides the “basics” I have learned about the power of groups and a lot more about me as an instrument. There isn’t a day that I don’t “go back” and feel (and miss) that strength and that I don’t look forward to opportunities to make a difference using myself as an instrument. As Debra once said XMA was a gift, a great one, to me, so thank you Debra, Bill, Warner, Carin, Elissa, Alan, Peter, Terry and all others for everything!

Dr. Marie Volpe, Words cannot describe the value of your teaching! Your dissertation seminar has provided me with not only a direction, but also with the confidence to pursue my Ed.D. journey. You have the gift of human embrace, inspiration, and bringing people together, all with your pragmatic approaches, wit and good humor. Thank you!

Special shout-out to Dr. Noah Drezner for his continuous support and patience with me. Dr. Drezner has helped me on several occasions organize my thoughts, dive deeper into my thinking, and challenge myself. I can't imagine my TC journey without him and am forever grateful for his mentorship. Thank you for all that you do, Noah! Quite simply: You are the best advisor!
A.J. Vervoort
Dr. Mensah and Dr. Riccio-- Thank you for all the amazing work you do to support us in Science Education. I know I could not have made it through these three years without your tremendous help and guidance. Thank you so much!
Kristen

Haeny Yoon -- your ethics, your knowledge, your commitments to ethnographic work and reflexivity, and on and on, make you super human. Words could never be enough 'payment' for all the critical care you've provided to your students. We love you to the moon.
