New International Student Welcome Information


The Office of International Services at Teachers College is excited to welcome you to TC!  We hope that you have a great journey during your time here and our office is here to assist you along the way!

New International Student Welcome Day 2020

The Office of International Services invites you to attend New International Student Welcome Day. This day is for all new and incoming international students - and for anyone who feels 'international!' Come and meet returning students, OIS staff and volunteers, and staff from other TC offices.

During the New International Student Welcome Day, you have the opportunity to attend the following sessions:

F-1 Visa Orientation

F-1 students who are new to Teachers College (including F-1 students transferring to Teachers College from other institutions) are required to attend an F-1 Visa Orientation session. Attendance at this session is mandatory. At the F-1 visa orientation OIS staff will explain essential F-1 immigration rules and requirements, including:

  • Full-time Study
  • Employment
  • Travel and Re-entry
  • Departure and Termination of Status

J-1 Visa Orientation

J-1 students who are new to Teachers College (including J-1 students transferring to Teachers College from other exchange visitor programs) are required to attend a J-1 Visa Orientation session. Attendance at this session is mandatory. At the visa orientation OIS staff will explain essential J-1 immigration rules and requirements, including:

  • Full-time Study
  • Employment and Taxes
  • Travel and Re-entry
  • Departure and Termination of Status

New International Student Check-In

Check-in is mandatory for all initial and transfer F-1 and J-1 students upon arrival in the US. In order to complete the Check-In process, you will need the following: 

  • The New International Student Information FormPlease complete only after arriving in the U.S. or TC.
  • Valid Passport(s): For you and your family, if applicable.
  • F-1 or J-1 Visa: Exception: Canadian citizens are not required to have entry visas.
  • Form I-20 or DS-2019: Be sure to sign your I-20/DS-2019 form at the bottom of the page.
  • I-94 Arrival/Departure Record: In order to obtain a copy of your I-94, you must: 
    • Log on to the Department of Homeland Security website: https://i94.cbp.dhs.gov/I94/#/home
    • Click on "Get Most Recent I-94"
    • Read through the "Security Notification" and click "Consent & Continue"
    • Enter your information to retrieve your most recent I-94 record

 Tips on retrieving your most recent I-94 record

  • Enter your name as it appears in your passport
  • Be sure to check and enter your birthday month and birthday date correctly
  • Make sure that the information you entered matches the information in your passport
  • If you have multiple names, you might consider entering different combinations as the port of entry officer may have entered only one or all of the names appearing on your passport
  • If you continue to encounter issues retrieving your I-94 record or there are errors on your record, please speak to one of the international advisors
