The Department of Mathematics, Science and Technology and the CMLTD program celebrated the careers of Dr. Howard "Howie" Budin and Dr. Charles "Chuck" Kinzer in April 2016. The events were celebrations of their contributions to the program and their work in the field.

Dr. Howie Budin

After an impressive 40+ year career as a teacher, researcher, and mentor, Dr. Budin retired from TC at the end of this academic year. Along with the late Dr. Robert Taylor, former faculty member in CMLTD, Dr. Budin implemented a master's program in computing and education for teachers (now offered online). It provides students who teach in K-12 schools or have interest in working with technologies in schools a space to create community within the program and to test various media of technological tools without geographical barriers. In addition, Dr. Budin has also been a co-director with Dr. Ellen Meier at the Center for Technology and School Change, which works with teachers and students to study the impact of technology in the classroom.

Dr. Chuck Kinzer

Dr. Kinzer, former program coordinator and faculty member in CMLTD, began his career at Vanderbilt University. After coming to TC in 2003, he helped cultivate a sense of community, which included initiating and leading the Games Research Lab as a director and being a principal investigator in multiple research projects, including LIT, a mobile game designed around breath therapy to help users quit smoking, and STEPS to Literacy, a multimodal Web-based program to help English language learners practice discipline-specific essay writing in an online, bilingual writing space.

Celebrations for Dr. Budin and Dr. Kinzer took place Thursday, April 14th and Friday, April 29th, respectively, and were attended by colleagues, students, alumni, and family members.
