Got Math? Integrating the Common Core Shifts into Mathematics Instruction

Developed by Dr. Peter Garrity, an adjunct professor of mathematics and education at Teachers College, Columbia University, MathCamp is a five-day intensive program to help teachers apply the shifts specified by the Common Core Standards into their classroom instruction by fully exploring mathematics in a variety of unique and hands-on ways.

The camp aims to deepen not only content knowledge, but also the critical pedagogical content knowledge that leads to richer explanations and more complete representations, all of which strengthen the foundations of mathematical meaning. Professor Garrity offers that the MathCamp was inspired in part by his work with teachers in the classroom. "MathCamp is positioned from a classroom perspective.  Through classroom-focused and classroom-based theories, discussions, and applications, it positions educators to cultivate engagement and interest in mathematics," reflects Professor Garrity. Recognizing that there is a need for teachers to share ideas, strategies, and their best practices, the space was fostered and designed to help teachers walk away with better strategies to further engage students and promote deeper understanding of math.

This year, MathCamp took place July 6-10 for elementary school educators and July 13-17 for middle school educators, with seventy educators participating in the camp. Participants could earn 3 CEUs upon successful completion of the workshop. For more information about MathCamp, please email or call the mathematics education program at (212) 678-3381.
