2021 Graduates

Erica Walker

Dear MST Graduates,

Congratulations on your graduation from Teachers College! On behalf of all of the MST faculty and staff, I extend our very best wishes to you. We've enjoyed getting to know you during your time at TC, and are so proud of you for all of your accomplishments! It’s been a challenging year – we’ve missed being able to get together in person and I don’t think anyone expected that we would spend a whole academic year in virtual, remote learning mode. But it’s our pleasure to “see” you on Zoom in our classes, colloquia, meet-ups, lab meetings, office hours, and social gatherings.

While we aren't able to share our congratulations with you in person this April, we look forward to welcoming you back to MST and TC events in the future, one day soon – hopefully!—in person.  As you can see from this gallery, you and your peers have done amazing work at TC, and we are always happy to learn with and from our terrific MST students. We know that in times of difficulty and upheaval in the world, our MST students, faculty, staff, and alumni are always striving to make things better. Thank you for spending part of your lives with us in the CMLTD suite, the Science Education corridor, and the Program in Mathematics offices. Please keep in touch with us; we always want to hear from our alumni!

Warmly,

Dissertation: An Analysis of the Redesigned SAT I-Mathematics: Perceptions of Teachers, English Proficient Students, and English Language Learners

I am indebted to my dissertation committee and the Teachers College faculty who have helped me throughout my doctoral career. Special thanks to my family. Without their support, I would still be writing the Literature Review and eating Ramen packages for all my meals.

I'd like to thank all of the professors I have had the pleasure of working with in the MSTM department, particularly Dr. Weinberg! Each of you have made a positive impact on my journey into my own classroom. I would also like to thank the students I have been able to work with in the department, especially those who I am graduating with (Juliette, Jenny, Nina, Wenrui, and Larry)!

While the two-year graduate student life at TC has been an amazing yet challenging journey for me, especially amid the pandemic, I don’t want to end this chapter so soon. I feel so lucky to have met teachers and classmates who have impacted my life greatly in the past 2 years. I would like to express my sincere appreciation to my advisor, Dr. Chang, and the instructors who have taught me before: Dr. Holbert, Dr. Literat, Dr. Kuwata, Dr. Meier, Monica, and Dr. Lee. I already miss the good times having dynamic conversations with faculty and peers in classrooms, and taking a moment to sunbathe in the grass on the CU campus. Hope we’ll have a chance to meet again someday in the future!

Dissertation: ELIMINATING REMEDIAL MATHEMATICS: A CASE STUDY OF THE DESIGN AND IMPLEMENTATION OF A MODULAR MATHEMATICS CURRICULUM

Thank you to everyone in the MSTM department for making my journey here at TC memorable and fruitful. A special thanks to Dr. Smith and Dr. Wasserman for imparting their wisdom and expertise on me, and whose contributions were invaluable to the success of my dissertation. I would be remiss if I did not mention Dr. Vogeli, who provided me words of encouragement I needed to persevere in the early stages of my education at TC. I only wish I could shake his hand and give him thanks for all he has done for me and countless others. Ultimately, I am so grateful to my wife Elizabeth, with her patience, understanding, and support over the better part of the last decade I succeeded in accomplishing something remarkable.

I'm extremely grateful for the amazing experiences I've had during my time at Teachers College, and thankful for all of my professors' hard work and guidance, especially Dr. Mensah, my unwavering mentor, without whom I would not have made it through the last five years. TC has opened my eyes to the many ways that I can make a contribution to the education of teachers and students, and I'm excited to get out into the world and make a difference! Time flies, and I still remember the curious and exciting feeling I had when I arrived at Whittier Hall to get my Student ID about two years ago. I spent four wonderful semesters with outstanding professors here, and I also made some close friends. We spent the most difficult time together during the pandemic, and now summer is coming and things are getting better. I love TC, I love Columbia, and I love New York deeply. Now I am about to leave, and I don't know when I will come back or in what capacity. But I will regard my time here as the most unforgettable experience in my life.

My time at TC Columbia has been truly transformative. Although we have spent a year learning virtually since March 2020, I feel that I have learned so much and enjoyed the process a lot. I'm so grateful for meeting so many supportive faculty and staff members, as well as the talented students. I hope there will be a day when we can all meet in person! Thank you all for the wonderful learning experience!

I had a wonderful time at TC! Living through COVID in New York gave me a new perspective of the city. I really enjoyed the two years that I spent here, and it would be perfect if we could have a physical graduation ceremony. Also, check out my work on my website: lingyizhou.com

Who could have imagined that my entire TC experience would take place in my bedroom? Who could have guessed that I would be educating students through the camera on my monitor? Who could have though that Zoom would be helping me form relationships with my professors and peers? The short answer: "It depends." When I think about how my past year was spent, I think of the night classes where my professors would guide me to think about a familiar concept in a completely new way; I think of my own teaching where my students would always keep me on my toes; I think of my Tea(m) who always found ways to help me when I didn't understand, support me in times of need, and make me laugh or smile. Cheers to a wonderful year full of theorems, questions, confusions, resolutions, grading, eliciting, conceptual understanding, procedural fluency, and mathematical reasoning and/or problem solving. Now... let's go teach some Math!!!
