Alumni Update: Dr. Spyridon Varthis, D.D.S., M.S., Ph.D., Doctorate in Science Education

Science Education alumni Dr. Spyridon Varthis, D.D.S., M.S., Ph.D. was invited to give a presentation focusing on "Blended Learning" and how it can be applied to the dental curriculum at the 45th Annual American College of Prosthodontics (ACP) meeting in the Joint Educators Conference (Orlando, Florida). With his philosophy advocating that "the fundamental purpose of education is to generate people who are proficient in creating new ideas, discoveries, and innovations," Dr. Varthis aims to support students in developing a robust understanding of science through progressive teaching methods that educational settings and policies demand.

Dr. Varthis pursued his Ph.D. in Science Education at Teachers College, while pursuing a fellowship in Maxillofacial Prosthetics at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City. He received his Doctor of Dental Surgery (D.D.S.) degree from the Technical University of Cluj-Napoca in Romania. After that, he successfully completed a three-year postdoctoral program at the Columbia University College of Dental Medicine that lead to a certificate in Prosthodontics and a Masters of Science (M.S.) degree. Dr. Varthis has served both as an Assistant Clinical Professor at New York University's College of Dentistry and as a Clinical Instructor at the Columbia University College of Dentistry. His current areas of interest include blended learning, curriculum development, and neurocognitive theory applied to the learning sciences.

The ACP and ACP Education Foundation are aligned to advance the dental specialty and discipline of prosthodontics. For more information, please visit
