Key facts and figures on school staffing

• In 2006, there were 3,954,000 pre-kindergarten-12 teachers in the United States with 4,330,000 teaching jobs projected by 2016 (Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2008).
• According to analyses of the Schools and Staffing Survey conducted in 1999-2000 almost one third of teachers were in transition, either joining a new school at the beginning of the year (534,861) or leaving at the end (539,778) (Ingersoll, 2003b).
• Of teachers in transition, over half of the new hires (302,629) and almost half of those who left (287,370) were teachers changing schools.
• While the overall turnover rate was about 15% in 2000-2001, the turnover rate in low poverty schools was about 12%; it was about 16% in rural high poverty schools; and about 22% in urban high poverty schools (Ingersoll, 2003b).
