The Michigan Department of Education Early Middle College Project (2018-present)

NCREST serves as a research and thought partner of the Michigan Department of Education (MDE) – Office of Career and Technical Education (OCTE), in collaboration with the Michigan Early Middle College Association (MEMCA). Through this project, NCREST is developing a profile of early middle college schools/programs throughout the state of Michigan. The information collected will be used to provide guidance and support to school, program, and state leaders seeking to create and support strong and effective models.

About the partner organization

The Michigan Department of Education – Office of Career and Technical Education provides technical assistance and support for the implementation and improvement of career and technical education (CTE) and early middle college (EMC) programs in the state of Michigan. The organization’s works closely with regional administrators and aims to provide access to equitable and high-quality CTE and EMC programs.

Key activities

NCREST is involved in the following activities in support of the EMC initiative in Michigan through MDE, in collaboration with MEMCA:

  • Creating and administering a survey of EMC schools/ programs across the state of Michigan describes the key features and designs of EMCs and high school graduation award outcomes for EMC students. This information will be used to inform technical assistance and support MDE provides to their EMCs.
  • Using data sets collected by the state, NCREST is analyzing EMC students’ high school and postsecondary enrollment, persistence and performance.
