To the TC Community: It is with great sadness that Teachers Colleges notes the passing of Shirley S. Passow, a long-time friend and supporter of the College and an active advocate for education itself.
Many of you have seen news stories reporting that the New York City Police Department monitored the web sites of Muslim Student Associations at several colleges and universities, both within and outside of New York City. The reports also allege that the NYPD engaged in surveillance of Muslim students from many of these institutions.
To the TC Community: Teachers College extends its deepest sympathy and concern to the people of Japan and other Pacific Rim nations following the recent earthquake and tsunami. We have been informed that our colleagues in TC's TESOL Japan program safely exited their building. TC's Office of International Student Services is referring concerned individuals to Google's Person Finder -- http://japan.person-finder.appspot.com -- to help locate relatives, friends or colleagues who may be affected by the recent events.
Using new media can help court-involved youth see a bigger picture
In the following letter to alumni, Susan Fuhrman, President of Teachers College, highlights key happenings at the College this spring:
March 2010 Dear Alumni: Many good wishes from all of us here at Teachers College. We are well into 2010 and the impact and influence of our work is evident every day: faculty members devising innovative solutions to urgent problems; timely events that convene prominent national and global experts; and talented students determined to make a difference in the world-and doing just that.
Teachers College joins with people all over the world in expressing its horror, grief and concern about the recent earthquake in Haiti.
TC President Fuhrman gave her 2009 State of the College Address on October 28th. Her theme was the College's impact - locally, nationally and internationally. The full transcript of her remarks follows.
