NYS-PROFESSIONAL certificate requirements

FYI  - NYSED - Types of Certificates

  • The New York State Education Department (NYSED) TEACH online system should be used to verify certification status.

  • Students in an education program leading to Initial or Professional Teacher certification program completion at Teachers College, Columbia University, are eligible for NYS- teacher certification recommendation, upon satisfactory completion of all NYSED requirements listed below and degree conferral:

    • NYSED “GENERAL-Core Liberal Arts and Sciences” Pre-requisites (see below)--Contact OTE via email: OTE@tc.edu
      • Pre-K (Birth-2), Elementary (1-6), Middle School (5-9) & Generalist (7-12) Level: 6 credits (each) in:
        • Math (courses, taken under “MATH” Dept. ONLY)
        • Science (courses taken under “SCIENCE” Dept. ONLY)
        • English
        • History
        • Foreign Language (NOTE: 3 cr required ONLY)

      • Secondary (7-12) Level & Special Subjects (K-12) Level: 3 credits (each) in:
        • Math (courses taken under “MATH” Dept. ONLY)
        • Science (courses taken under “SCIENCE” Dept. ONLY)
        • English
        • History
        • Foreign Language
        • NOTE: TESOL ONLY-total Foreign Language = 12 cr
    • NYSED “CONTENT-Core” requirement 30 credits (Contact your academic program)

      • Pre-K, Elementary, Middle School, Generalist Levels
        • Liberal Arts & Science- 30 credits

      • Secondary subjects grades 7-12 area or Special subjects grades K-12: (related to that teaching certificate subject area)
        • (i.e. Math, Biology, English, Music, Art, etc)- 30 credits


NYSED required workshops: 

  • Child Abuse Identification: at TC  or online
  • School Violence Intervention and Prevention: at TC or online
  • Dignity For All Students Act (DASA)
  • Autism (required ONLY for candidates applying for NYS-Students With Disabilities teaching certificates)NYS-PROFESSIONAL


In addition, the NYSED requires candidates to hold:

  • NYS-INITIAL certifcate-in same title grades level
  • Masters Degree
  • Paid, full-time Classroom teaching experience- 3 years minimum
  • Mentored experience- 1 year
  • fingerprint clearance
  • Citizenship status-INS Permanent Resident or U.S. Citizenship
