School Building Leader(SBL) Certification & School District Leader(SDL)Certification

School Building Leader (SBL):

The Teachers College, Columbia University's Master of Arts & Master of Education - New York State (NYS)-Summer Principals Academy (SPA-NYS)- Organization & Leadership-Public School Building Leadership approved teacher preparation program completion leads to a NYSED-School Building Leader (SBL)-INITIAL/PROFESSIONAL certificate title/type via institutional recommendation. 

NYSED-EXAMS required:  The NYSED requires passing the EAS, SBL part 1 & SBL part 2 prior to the NYSED issuing the SBL-INITIAL certificate type. 

The NYSED-requires the following to be satisfactorily completed prior either the MA or the EdM degree conferral and the institutional recommendation to be processed:

  • WORKSHOPS: (Child Abuse, School Violence Prevention, Dignity for All Students Act).  These workshops proof of completion must be submitted to the OTE prior to the MA or EdM degree conferral, NYSED-institutional recommendation and any out-of state form completion in support of the SBL approved teacher prearation program completion.

The SBL-INITIAL/PROFESSIONAL institutional recommendation will be entered upon the candidate's request and the candidate's completed Institutional Recommendation Data Form (IRDF) submission to the OTE.

 

 

 

School District Leader (SDL):

The Teachers College, Columbia University's Doctor of Education in Organization & Leadership- approved teacher preparation program completion in Public School District Leadership and in Urban Education Leaders leads to a NYSED-School District Leader (SDL)-PROFESSIONAL certificate type, upon institutional recommendation request.

NYSED-EXAMS required:  The NYSED requires passing the EAS, SDL part 1 & SDL part 2 prior to the EdD degree conferral and institutional recommendation to be processed.

The NYSED-requires the following to be satisfactorily completed prior to the EdD degree conferral and institutional recommendation to be processed:

  • WORKSHOPS: (Child Abuse, School Violence Prevention, Dignity for All Students Act).  These workshops proof of completion must be submitted to the OTE prior to the EdD degree conferral, NYSED-institutional recommendation and any out-of state form completion in support of the SDL approved teacher prearation program completion.

The SDL/PROFESSIONAL institutional recommendation will be entered upon the candidate's request and submission of the completed Institutional Recommendation Data Form (IRDF) to the OTE.

Classroom teaching experience includes experience earned in a public or approved nonpublic preschool or elementary, middle, or secondary school as well as in-state & out-of-state- experience. 

Claimed experience may be in any grade or subject. 

Experience that is not full time may be credited on a prorated basis.

Teaching assistant experience is not applicable to this requirement.
 

 

Note:
Teachers working as substitutes in numerous districts may wish to have each district verify the experience by providing a short letter on district letterhead.

Completion of New York certification requirements and Teachers College programs does not automatically translate into certification or licensure in other states.

If you plan on seeking certification outside of New York State,it will be to your advantage to investigate certification requirements for that state. While there is reciprocity betweenNew York and many other states, there may be additional courses and exams required by the state where you seek certification. In most states, applicants may be issued a temporary license for one to two years, during which additional requirements must be completed.

IMPORTANT Information:

1. Completed Institutional Recommendation Data Form (IRDF) must be returned to the Office of Teacher Education with required workshops proof of completion in (Child Abuse, School Violence Prevention, and Dignity for All Students Act). These workshops are required for degree conferral and institutional recommendation for SBL and SDL.    NOTE:  All workshops are required to be completed and submitted to the OTE whether you are going for NYS or out of state certification/licensure.
