Adult Learning and Leadership

Department of Organization & Leadership

It is with such a heavy heart that we announce the passing of our wonderful colleague, Dr. Patricia Cranton, an Adjunct Professor in Adult Learning and Leadership.   Dr. Cranton had been living in New Brunswick, an area of Canada where she had her home and her property that she loved, and where she walked and lived in solitude with her companion animals.  While it is unclear how exactly Patricia died, it appears that she was doing some of what she so enjoyed -- walking in the nature of her property, hopefully contemplating the wonders of the woods and of the nature of her property and land that she loved so dearly.

Dr. Cranton was one of North America's foremost thinkers in the area of Transformative Learning. She and Ed Taylor edited theHandbook of Transformative Learning in 2012.   In addition, the third edition of her book, Understanding and Promoting Transformative Learning was just released by Stylus on June 2 of 2016.   Dr. Cranton 's publications, and her thinking and ideas about transformative learning and educating adults in numerous settings have been a bedrock to our field for the past 25 years or more.

Dr. Cranton has written several books, published numerous journal articles, and supervised well over a hundred doctoral dissertations.  She was a sought after mentor, an incredible writer blending rational thinking and analysis, with a flair for using metaphor.  She was also an absolutely incredible photographer, who loved nature, the wild places of the earth,  her animals (especially her current dogs Cookie and Foxy, as well as her prior dogs and cats.).  She was incredibly introverted in many ways, but she was nevertheless full of dry wit and a lot of fun for those that knew her well.

Dr. Cranton had taught online courses for Teachers College in Transformative Learning and Imagination and Authenticity in Teaching and Learning for many years. Students who took her courses consistently found them to be among the most engaging, insightful and transformative they experienced. While the Adult Learning & Leadership Program will continue to offer online courses in the future focused on Transformative Learning, Dr. Cranton cannot ever truly be "replaced." Her loss to our community and to the field is deeply felt.

The Adult Learning and Leadership Program will host a memorial in the Fall for those who knew Dr. Cranton to gather in her memory.
