| Teachers College has a new series of human subjects training courses provided by the Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI). Information on CITI and the many courses on human subjects and all areas of responsible conduct of research may be found at www.citiprogram.org as of April 1, 2011 the IRB/Human Subjects Training Requirement at Teachers College will be as follows:All first-time applicants for IRB approval are required to take the following seven basic sub-modules within the CITI program’s course in Human Subjects Protections for Social/Behavioral Research (SBR):
Training certification will also include any two (2) of the remaining elective sub-modules in the SBR course. These should be selected according to your own particular research plans. Although only two electives are required, the materials provided include many real world examples of IRB issues and resolutions, so taking additional electives may be helpful when preparing your own IRB application.
In order to insure a smooth transition to the CITI training, all faculty and all students who have previously received approval from the Teachers College IRB are exempt from the new training requirement. The IRB and the administration reserves the right to implement continuing education requirements in the future, consistent with the practice at other research institutions.
The new training policy goes into effect April 1, 2011.
