Development for Digital Learning

Development Policy for Digital Learning

Owner: Provost

Statement of Purpose

To establish administrative procedures for the development of new online courses for Advanced Certificates and Masters Degrees with the Office of Digital Learning.

Digital Offerings Defined

Online program development is defined by either developing a new course with new content to be delivered in a digital format or transitioning content from a face to face program to a digital format.

Compensation Structure and Explanation

Compensation for faculty who are developing online programs is funded through the Office of Digital Learning. Per course compensation applies only to programs that are entirely new to Teachers College in either content for format, and are not for existing Teachers College degree students and are therefore aimed at an external audience.

Per Course Development Compensation: $2,500 ($25/hour for 100 hours of development time) *

Course Instructors for Online Course Development

Typically, the instructor of record for any course that is moving online will be the same faculty who will initially develop the online course. Subsequently, the program director may choose to hire other instructors or adjunct faculty to teach the content. Programs that wish to hire outside instructors must work with the Office of Digital Learning using standard new hire protocol. In addition to completing standard hiring paperwork with Human Resources, outside instructors must present a current CV and must have written support from the faculty of the department. In addition, outside instructors must have at least a master’s degree.  Please refer to the Professorial and Instructional Staff Appointment Handbook for further information.

A faculty member who is in combination with individual course development also serving as the leader of the project (i.e. coordinating individual pieces of the project) will be compensated at the rate of per course development in addition to any individual course development compensation. Programs are expected to be fully developed within two semesters of starting work and it is understood that individual course development should be completed within one semester. This policy will go into effect on September 1, 2018 and will be subject to review on an annual basis.

*Per course development compensation will be split if a course is being co-developed.
