About the Project

The Korean SBLA Project is a collaborative effort between the Korean Language Program at Columbia University and the SBLA Lab. Launched in February 2020, the Korean SBLA Project has successfully developed and administered its prototype CEFR B1-level Korean SBLA. Currently, the team is working on Version 2 of the assessment with the goal of conducting another round of pilot in the fall of 2021.

Joowon Suh is a Senior Lecturer in Korean and the Director of the Korean Language Program in the Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures at Columbia University. Prior to joining Columbia in 2017, she taught at Princeton University as Director of the Korean Language Program. She also served on the task forces that created Standards for Foreign Language Learning: Korean (2012) and College Korean Curriculum Inspired by National Standards for Korean (2015). She is currently serving as President of the American Association of Teachers of Korean. Her research interests include Korean linguistics and language pedagogy, discourse analysis, sociolinguistics, and interlanguage pragmatics.

Ji-Young Jung is Lecturer in Korean in the Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures of Columbia University. Ji-Young received her Ed.D. in Applied Linguistics from Teachers College, Columbia University in 2009. Ji-Young is a certified tester of ACTFL OPI and ILR, and a co-author of Accelerated Korean I and II (2020, University of Hawai‘i Press), the first Standards-based, college Korean textbook designed for heritage learners. Ji-Young has published her work on Korean language pedagogy, including teaching pragmatics, multiliteracies, and intercultural competence.

Yuna Seong has been in the field of ESL and second language assessment since 2000. She is currently a Clinical Assistant Professor at the English Language Institute (ELI), New York University and is currently working towards her doctoral degree in applied linguistics at Teachers College, Columbia University with specialization in second language assessment. Her research interests include teaching and assessing second language speaking ability, scenario-based assessment, and cognitive processes in second language test performance. She is also an SAT/PSAT fairness reviewer for College Board and instructor of Classroom Practices at the TESOL Certificate Program at Teachers College.

Soo Hyoung Joo is a doctoral student in the Applied Linguistics Program at Teachers College, Columbia University. She has taught ESL and EFL learners since 2008. She worked as an item writer for ETS, Pearson, and Cambridge University Press, and as an assessment editor for Oxford University Press. She served as chair for TESOL/AL Roundtable and recently worked as Program Associate for the Applied Linguistics and TESOL Program at Teachers College. Her research focus is on second language assessment, in particular learning-oriented assessment, scenario-based assessment, and the use of technology in assessment.
