Bruce S. Goldberg Postdoctoral Fellow in Youth Wellbeing - Center for Sustainable Futures
We are seeking a postdoctoral fellow to join the new Center for Sustainable Futures (CSF) at Teachers College, Columbia University. The Center envisions a regenerative world in which we achieve a balance between planet, people, and prosperity. Our mission is to promote learning, build awareness, and cultivate critical skills across communities as a means of working individually and collectively towards the promotion of the long-term sustainability of complex living systems. The CSF supports and conducts original research, engages in research-practice partnerships, mentors and trains graduate students, and uses data to inform evidence-based policy, practice, and public communication.
One specific area we are exploring is the ways in which families engage with sustainability challenges, such as climate change. Many individuals, particularly parents, may experience anxiety and other negative emotions as a result of exposure to the growing climate change discourse and the ways in which these changes may impact the well-being of their children. We are therefore seeking new research and practice pathways to engage parents and families with climate change education and action.
We are seeking a postdoctoral fellow who employs quantitative and/or qualitative research methods with expertise in the intersection of climate change, youth, and families. This fellowship provides the fellow with the opportunity to pursue independent research on a topic related to climate change, sustainability, families, and youth. In addition, the fellow will have the opportunity to join existing research projects at the CSF. The Goldberg Postdoctoral Fellow will receive mentorship from CSF faculty and will have the chance to mentor graduate students and engage in other aspects of academic life at Teachers College and Columbia University more broadly. There may also be opportunities to co-author publications and presentations, and to assist with grant writing. The fellow is expected to be an active participant in the scholarly community at the Center and Teachers College.
The fellowship includes a $65,000 annual salary and other benefits afforded to full-time professional employees (e.g. health insurance). This position is also awarded $5,000 in research funding. Appointment is for a twelve-month period, and renewable for a second year contingent upon satisfactory progress. The start date is negotiable and can fall between September 1, 2020 – October 1, 2020.
- Strong communication skills (writing, public speaking, digital communication).
- Experience with community outreach and public engagement.
- Must work and collaborate well with other members of a project team.
- Comfortable taking initiative, working independently to solve problems, and strong follow through.
- Prior teaching and mentoring experience at undergraduate or graduate level (informal teaching experiences will be considered).
- PhD, EdD, or equivalent (preference to degrees in social science and education)
- Previous experience with independent research on sustainability, climate change or related topics (quantitative and qualitative methods will be considered).
- Previous experience working as part of a project team.
