The Teacher Opportunity Corps (TOC II) is a New York State Education Department grant designed to increase the number of underrepresented and economically disadvantaged individuals in the New York State teaching force. At Teachers College, TOC II is generously supplemented with funding from Teachers College scholarship funds for aspiring New York City teachers, allowing each TOC II member who remains in good standing to receive a total of 6 tuition points and $2,000 across the academic year.

During the TOC II academic year, TOC members attend seminars and workspaces designed to support them in their work as inclusive, anti-racist, and culturally sustaining teachers. Many TOC II members report that TOC II spaces serve as a powerful place to connect with others, recharge, and feel affirmed in their own identities. In addition, TOC II members complete a ten month internship (typically one day a week) across the school year. All of our internship partner schools primarily serve communities of color and most are located in District 5, just north of Teachers College.

After graduation, members of TC’s Teacher Opportunity Corps are required to teach in a New York State public school for at least 2 years, preferably within the five boroughs of New York  City. TOC II staff and faculty are available to support TOC students with their job hunts, and many of our spring professional development offerings focus on supporting students as they seek positions within the New York City Department of Education.
