Costs & Financial Aid

Financial Supports

Teaching Residents at Teachers College is funded in part by a federal Teacher Quality Partnership grant. Teaching Residents receive generous financial support that includes a federal stipend of $40,000 and a Teachers College stipend that is equivalent to 22 Teachers College credits. Both stipends are divided over the first four semesters of the program. Upon admission, each Teaching Resident is sent a financial aid package detailing the financial supports that they will receive while in the program.

TR@TC supports pre-service teachers with a strong desire to teach in New York City high-need public schools as long-term career teachers. When Teaching Residents are accepted into the program, they commit to serving in New York City public schools for a minimum of three years. Funding offered during the residency requires that this agreement to serve will be honored.

TC Stipend

Teaching Residents receive the dollar equivalent of 22 Teachers College credit hours in a stipend. At the current 2022-2023 tuition rate, this totals $42,086

Out-of-Pocket Cost for Tuition & Fees

Teaching Residents are responsible for the remaining costs of tuition and fees, which varies based on whether the stipend is applied toward TC expenses or other costs. As a prospective graduate student, other expenses include the college and course fees, books, certification costs, fingerprinting, health insurance, room & board, transportation, as well as other personal expenses.

Teacher Opportunity Corps (TOC)

The Teacher Opportunity Corps (TOC) program is funded by the New York State Education Department and is designed to increase New York State teachers from underrepresented backgrounds.

In addition to your TR@TC responsibilities, Teaching Residents who are admitted to TC's TOC program also:

  • Complete a 10-month internship in a NYC school for 4-7 hours per week (alongside TR@TC fieldwork),
  • Attend TOC seminars with TC faculty,
  • Participate in TOC workspaces with your fellow interns, and
  • Commit to a two-year teaching service obligation in a public NYS school (Teaching Residents can meet this requirement simultaneously with TR@TC's NYC high-needs three-year service requirement).

In exchange, you will receive 6 tuition points (an $11,478 value for 2022-2023*), and a $2,000 stipend. Please find out more about the eligibility requirements on their webpage

You can learn more about TR@TC/TOC participants by clicking here.

TEACH Grant (Federal)

Teaching Residents are working toward certification areas of high demand. Because of this, you would be eligible and could apply for a TEACH Grant by filing the FAFSA application. If awarded, those accepting a TEACH Grant (you can accept or decline the offer) commit to a four-year service agreement as a highly qualified teacher in a high-need school that serves low-income students. Residents can meet this requirement simultaneously with TR@TC’s service requirement. To learn more about this funding opportunity, visit the TEACH Grant page, sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education.

The TEACH Grant provides grants of up to $4,000 a year. Funding will be disbursed at the beginning of each semester after closing the “add/drop” period. If you receive the TEACH Grant, your application will be reviewed by TC.

Most Residents qualify for and opt in to receive the TEACH Grant.

Teacher Loan Forgiveness Program (Federal)

You are eligible for loan forgiveness after five years of high-qualified teaching experience in a high-need school.

Further eligibility information by subject area:

  • Math, science, and special education teachers may be eligible for up to $17,500 in loan forgiveness.
  • All other teachers may be eligible for $5,000 in loan forgiveness.

To be eligible for the Teacher Loan Forgiveness Program, you must read the program’s requirements and follow the steps required by the federal government. If you have questions, you should contact the U.S. Department of Education by clicking here.

Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)

Suppose you are a U.S. Citizen or eligible non-citizen and would like to be considered for federal financial aid, including loans, work-study, and the TEACH Grant. In that case, you can complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Doing so allows you to offset the cost of tuition with federally unsubsidized loans during the 18-month program.

Complete and submit two FAFSAs for the current & upcoming academic school year to learn if you are eligible. The institution code number for Teachers College is G03979. Do not wait for an offer to submit your FAFSA materials. TC’s Office of Financial Aid will send you a financial aid package. If you have questions about financial aid, don’t hesitate to contact TC’s financial aid office.
