The Laurie M. Tisch Food Center for Food, Education and Policy has received a grant from Newman’s Own Foundation through The Power of Food in Schools program. The Tisch Food Center is excited to use this funding to advance the mission of the Food Ed Hub to ensure that all NYC students have quality food and nutrition education and sustainably produced, culturally responsive, healthy school food.
The Food Ed Hub was established in 2019 through the advocacy of the Food Ed Coalition, now a group of over 350 food and nutrition education advocates, program leaders, and community members. The Food Ed Hub is designed to maximize impact, increase efficiency, and ensure services are equitably distributed. We facilitate coordination among food and nutrition programs, advocate for policies that support healthy school food and food education, develop capacity among organizations, provide resources and professional development opportunities to educators, and promote evidence-based recommendations to inform policy and practice.
Newman’s Own Foundation, a private foundation founded by legendary actor and philanthropist Paul Newman, is known for its radically good philanthropic legacy of “giving it all away.” The Foundation relaunched its mission in 2022 to be 100% focused on helping nourish and transform the lives of children who face adversity. Funded entirely by 100% of profits and royalties from Newman’s Own food and beverages, Newman’s Own Foundation has awarded the Tisch Food Center funding as part of its efforts to advance children’s nutrition security in schools.
The Power of Food in Schools grants program supports statewide and district-reaching organizations working toward every student having access to food education and/or nourishing meals in school. The grants will support organizations on various projects and stages of their work such as:
- Coalition building and goal setting
- Case studies and research
- Raising awareness through communications campaigns
- State policy and advocacy work
- Annual convening and/or training
