SUMMARY:Departmental Symposium: Rethinking Culture, Context, and Comparison in Education and Development
DESCRIPTION:The Department of International & Transcultural Studies presentsInternational SymposiumRethinking Culture, Context, and Comparison in Education and DevelopmentApril 4-5, 2013 Location: Milbank Chapel (Zankel 125) Research in education and development has become considerably more complicated and more intellectually engaging in the past few decades. Qualitative, multi-sited research, requiring researchers to attend to social, cultural, and political processes in multiple locations, has raised questions of how best to conceptualize context and rethink distinct levels and scales in educational research. In many regards, globalization has accentuated the need to rethink culture and context and understand how and why similar phenomena are, for cultural or contextual reasons, translated, interpreted and received differently. Taken together, these questions, conceptual developments, and research techniques pose provocative questions about the shifting nature of comparison in educational research.
