Edison Patents the Mimeograph: Technology in the Media
Title: Edison Patents the Mimeograph: Technology in the Media
Description:
Did you know that the mimeograph is a mechanical duplicator that produces copies by pressing ink onto paper through openings cut in a stencil? Thomas Edison received the patent on August 8, 1876 for the electric pen, used for making the stencil, and the flatbed duplicating press. The Edison Mimeograph was especially handy for printing short runs of office work, classroom material, church bulletins, and fanzines. Energy efficient and used widely until the 1960s, the mimeograph is the precursor to the more modern photocopy machine, also still in use, but supplanted by facsimile and digital scanners. On Friday, August 8th the Gottesman Libraries will exhibit stories in the news about the history and use of the mimeograph and its related technologies.
