Cowin Financial Literacy Institute

July 11, 2016 - July 14, 2016

Teachers College (TC), in collaboration with W!se (Working in Support of Education), will host the 2016 TC Cowin Financial Literacy Institute for high school teachers of financial literacy from July 11–14. The Institute will once again be based on the College’s West 120th Street campus, but for the first time, one full day will be hosted downtown by the Federal Reserve Bank of New York.

WHY ATTEND?

Learn to use the case study method to teach your high school-aged students financial literacy. Engage them as problem solvers in some of the most compelling dramas and dilemmas of personal money management.

The Institute offers a series of collaborative and interactive workshops on teaching personal finance that make explicit connections to standards and the Common Core. The workshops will provide you with instructional tools and resources to support students in resolving financial dilemmas and making good choices about budgeting, saving, investing, consumption, and borrowing.

REGISTRATION IS FREE

Thanks to the generous support of TC Trustee Joyce Cowin, the Institute is free, and teachers who attend all four days of the Institute will receive:

A $200 stipend
A Certificate of Completion from Teachers College that you may use for professional development credit hours
An opportunity to earn a Certification in Personal Finance by taking and passing the W!se Financial Literacy Teacher Certification Test

Is there a fee for taking the W!SE certification exam?
No. The fee is waived for Institute participants.

A continental breakfast and lunch will be served on each day of the Institute. Teachers College will host a reception and dinner on Wednesday, July 13, 2016.

HOUSING

What arrangements should I make for housing while I am at the conference?
Teachers coming from out of town generally choose to stay in (relatively) nearby hotels. The following hotels are near to Teachers College:

Aloft Harlem
Hampton Inn Manhattan-Times Square North
Hilton Garden Inn New York/Central Park South-Midtown West
Courtyard New York Manhattan/Herald Square
Courtyard New York Manhattan/Chelsea
Fairfield Inn & Suites New York Manhattan/Chelsea

TRANSPORTATION

How do I get to Teachers College using air/train/subway/car/bus?
Teachers College is located on the Upper West Side of Manhattan on 120th Street between Broadway and Amsterdam Avenue and is accessible by various modes of transportation. Click here for information on getting to campus by public transportation.

If I drive to the conference, will there be parking?
On-street parking spots have only 2-4 hour meters and are in short supply. There are several commercial garages in the Morningside Heights campus area, which you can find here. The Riverside Church garage is the closest parking garage to our event.

Will transportation be provided between Teachers College and the Federal Reserve Bank?
Attendees are responsible for transportation between the two venues. Transportation options are provided here.

OTHER QUESTIONS

Can teachers earn professional development credits for attending the Summer Institute?
Yes. Participants who have stayed for the full session receive a Certificate of Completion from Teachers College which most districts recognize for professional development credit hours.
