Program Description:

Dignity for All Students Act Training in Harassment, Bullying, Cyberbullying, and Discrimination in Schools

Every student deserves a school environment where they feel safe, respected, and valued. This six-hour workshop provides the training required by New York State for all individuals seeking  certification as school professionals. Teachers College, Columbia University is a provider approved by the New York State Education Department.

Grounded in the Dignity for All Students Act (Article 2, Sections 10–18 of the Education Law), this workshop takes a proactive approach to school safety, focusing not just on preventing harm, but on building affirming, inclusive school cultures where all students can thrive. Topics covered include:

  • The intent, key components, and operational definitions of the Dignity for All Students Act
  • Social patterns of harassment, bullying, and discrimination, including marginalization and microaggressions
  • Protected categories under the Dignity Act, including race, color, weight, national origin, ethnic group, religion, disability, sexual orientation, and gender
  • Cyberbullying: forms, warning signs, and intervention strategies
  • The distinction between conflict and bullying, and how to respond to each appropriately
  • Indicators and early warning signs of harassment, bullying, and discrimination
  • Prevention and intervention strategies, including how to interact with families of both students who have been bullied, and students who exhibit bullying behaviors
  • School climate and culture, and their impact on student achievement and behavior
  • Strategies for addressing exclusion, bias, and aggression in educational settings
  • Reporting requirements for educators under the Dignity Act

 

Workshop Format

This workshop combines three hours of self-paced asynchronous modules with a three-hour live Zoom session. Approximately ten days before your Zoom date, you will receive access to the DASA Canvas course with interactive modules to complete on your own schedule. All asynchronous work must be completed prior to the live session.

Dates & Registration

Zoom Session Dates:

  • Sunday, July 12th, 2026 - 10:00am - 1:00pm EST
  • Saturday, August 1st, 2026 - 10:00am - 1:00pm EST
  • Sunday, August 23rd, 2026 - 10:00am - 1:00pm EST

Times:

  • 3 hour Asynchronous Modules prior to your Zoom session
  • Zoom sessions run from 10:00am - 1:00pm EST

Format: Online Asynchronous Modules (3 hours) with a Live Zoom Session (3 hours) (See dates and times above)

Price: $75.00

Registration will close approximately 10 days before the workshop date or when the workshop is closed/full; at that time, all participants will receive access to the asynchronous module and are asked to complete it prior to their Zoom date.

This workshop is limited to 40 participants.

Participants are asked to arrive a half-hour before the Zoom session begins, in order to sign in and confirm that their audio and video functions are working. Latecomers will not be admitted.

*Participation in the Zoom session will require a strong internet connection and a device with a video camera.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Explain the intent, operational definitions, and key provisions of the Dignity for All Students Act
  • Demonstrate awareness and sensitivity to the experiences of student populations protected under the Dignity Act, and examine personal biases in the context of a multicultural environment
  • Identify indicators and early warning signs of harassment, bullying, cyberbullying, and discrimination, and distinguish these from general conflict
  • Describe evidence-based prevention and intervention strategies, including how to effectively engage with families of both students who have been bullied, and students who exhibit bullying behaviors
  • Articulate the reporting requirements for educators under the Dignity Act and apply strategies for fostering a positive, inclusive school climate

Upon Completion

Participants will receive a certificate of completion, and the TC Office of Teacher Education will report completion data directly to the New York State Education Department. Participants' TEACH accounts will be updated automatically. No additional steps required.
