Overview

The TCSOL/TESOL Dual Certificate Summer Program is a collaborative program co-sponsored by the Center for International Foreign Language Teacher Education (CIFLTE) at Teachers College, Columbia University and by Osaka Gakuin University in Osaka, Japan. This dual certificate program provides intensive training in the teaching of both Chinese and English. Participants, however, have the option of obtaining either a single certificate either in TCSOL or TESOL, or a dual TCSOL/TESOL certificate.

The TCSOL/TESOL Dual Certificate Summer Program especially encourages applicants who are

  • MA students/graduates in Chinese linguistics, English, Bilingual or Multilingual Education,

  • College seniors in Chinese linguistics, English, Bilingual or Multilingual Education,

  • Teachers of Chinese or English looking to enhance their teaching expertise,

  • Professionals considering a career change, or

  • Individuals seeking to acquire a new skill

Students who successfully complete the TCSOL/TESOL Dual Certificate Summer Program will receive a certificate jointly issued by Teachers College, Columbia University and Osaka Gakuin University to acknowledge their participation and achievement in the program. Attending the TCSOL/TESOL Dual Certificate Summer Program will also provide a significant advantage to applicants who decide to continue on to the TCSOL One-year Certificate Program at Teachers College, Columbia University. With the foundation that the summer program provides, students will be better equipped for the rigorous program at Teachers College. Application priority for the TCSOL One-Year Certificate Program will be given to students who demonstrate their ability during the summer program. Additionally, applicants who successfully complete the summer program will be eligible for a reduction of the tuition fee for the one-year courses, should they be admitted to the TCSOL Certificate Program at Teachers College, Columbia University.

Dr. ZhaoHong Han
Program Director

Dr. ZhaoHong Han is Professor of Language and Education at Teachers College, Columbia University, where she teaches graduate courses in Applied Linguistics, TESOL, and foreign language instruction. Her research interests are broadly in second language learnability, second language teachability, and their interface. Her work on fossilization, crosslinguistic influence, corrective feedback, second language thinking for speaking, second language reading and vocabulary development, second language reading instruction, and second language ab initio input processing has appeared in a variety of journals and books. Dr. Han is the recipient of the 2003 International TESOL Heinle and Heinle Distinguished Research Award, and a repeated recipient of the Teachers College, Columbia University Outstanding Teacher Award.

Dr.Han has served on the editorial boards of Applied Linguistics (Oxford; also as representative of the American Association for Applied Linguistics), GRETA Journal (Spain), Vigo International Journal of Applied Linguistics (VIAL, Spain), Foreign Language Teaching Theory and Practice (外语教学理论与实践, China), Chinese Journal of Applied Linguistics (formerly 中国英语教学; China), Chinese as a Second Language Research (Moulton de Gruyter), Language Teaching (Cambridge University Press), Second Language Learning Research (第二语言学习研究,China). She frequently consults to universities and school districts on research and teacher development grants and second language programs, curriculums, and materials.

Dr. Han has lived and taught in China, Italy, Norway, United Kingdom (Scotland, England), Japan, and Spain.

Dr. Lening Liu
Program Director

Dr. Lening Liu is Professor of East Asian Languages and Cultures and Director of the Chinese Language Program at Columbia University. In addition, he is the Director of the Confucius Institute and serves as co-director of the TCSOL Program with Dr. Han.

Dr. Lening Liu was born and raised in Xi’an, China. In 1977, right after the Cultural Revolution, he entered college as part of an extremely select group of students to finally end years of disruption of higher learning in China. After receiving a BA in Chinese Language and Literature from Shaanxi Normal University in 1982, and a MA in History of Chinese Language in 1985, he came to the United States in 1990 and studied linguistics at the University of Florida. He joined Columbia’s faculty in 1995 and received his Ph.D. in 1996. Liu’s research interests are in the areas of historical syntax, discourse grammar and Chinese language pedagogy. He has published a number of articles on the evolution of Chinese conjunctive adverbs, the rhetorical structures of Chinese, the history and innovation of Chinese pedagogy, etc. Courses he has taught include Introduction to Classical Chinese, Readings in Classical Chinese, History of Chinese Language, Educational Chinese Linguistics, Chinese Language Pedagogy and all levels of Modern Chinese. Currently, Liu is Professor of East Asian Languages and Cultures and Confucius Institute Director of Chinese Language Pedagogy.

Dr. Vivian Lindhardsen
Instructor of English Educational Linguistics

Dr. Vivian Lindhardsen is the director of the TESOL Certificate Program and the Community Language Program at Teachers College, Columbia University, and she teaches Grammar and Assessment courses in the TESOL and Applied Linguistics Program at TC. Dr. Lindhardsen’s main research interests include second language assessment and pedagogical approaches to teaching and assessing writing. She is currently a commissioner of the CEA (Commission on English Language Accreditation) and a member of the PRAXIS ESOL National Advisory Committee (NAC) at ETS.

The tuition fee varies depending on the track you apply to.

  • TCSOL only: $1,950
  • TESOL only: $1,950
  • Dual: $3,900

To ensure your place in the program, the full tuition fee must be paid within two weeks of the date you were accepted.

Late Fee

If the tuition fee is not paid within two weeks of the date you were accepted, an additional late fee of $100 will be incurred.
