Ph.D. Student, Philosophy and Education

Research Discipline/Bio

Taeyeong Kim is a Ph.D. student in the Philosophy and Education program at Teachers College, Columbia University. Drawing on a unique attunement to vulnerability shaped by his childhood experiences, he is interested in how education mediates between personal and psychological growth—such as trauma recovery—and societal and political development—such as the emergence of new epistemic resources. He is dedicated to illuminating what are often described as "deprivations" of students from a historical and inter-generational perspective, thereby uncovering their political potential and clarifying how education can contribute to its actualization. With this orientation, he engages seriously with phenomenology, psychoanalysis, and epistemic injustice, while remaining open to other areas of inquiry. He received an M.A. in Foundations of Education from Seoul National University, where he wrote his master’s thesis on the educational implications of Levinas’s concepts of insomnia and dwelling.
