REAL Doc Data Session with Mark Romig: Vocabulary Explanations in Pedagogical Interaction
In this interactive working session facilitated by Mark Romig, we will analyze videos and transcripts of vocabulary explanations from adult ESL classrooms. The goal is to uncover the interactional practices that the teachers and students engage in as the vocabulary explanations unfold and to understand how these practices may work together to accomplish learning of vocabulary knowledge distinct from meaning (e.g., collocations, word form, countability, etc.). Attendees will have the opportunity to engage in a data session, a common research practice within the field of Conversation Analysis, through a close line-by-line analysis of transcripts and videos.
About the Facilitator: Mark Romig is a doctoral student in Applied Linguistics at Teachers College, Columbia University. His dissertation research uses Conversation Analysis to investigate how vocabulary is taught in L2 settings when the focus is not on meaning (e.g., collocations, verb subcategorization, word form, etc.). Currently, he teaches courses at CUNY Hunter and Teachers College on the linguistic analysis and structure of English and second language acquisition, and he supervises TESOL teacher candidates working with PK-12 and adult students.
