A Broad Foundation

The Reading Specialist Program has a life span focus with regard to literacy acquisition, assessment and intervention.  Students gain experience learning about and providing assessment and intervention with children, adolescents and adults who have reading and writing difficulties.  Upon completion of the required course of study, students are eligible for New York State certification as a Teacher of Literacy at both levels of certification, Birth to 6 and Grades 5 to 12.

Professional Development Preparation

Assessment and Intervention Focus

Students learn to deploy a battery of classroom-based and standardized assessment measures to identify strengths and weaknesses of individual students and groups, and then develop an intervention plan based on the assessment findings.
