Empowering Minds: Brain Health Awareness at St. Luke’s AME Church
In this inspiring video, Anita Parker, Director of Community Outreach at St. Luke’s, and Dr. Shah, a neurologist at CUMC, speak at St. Luke’s AME Church during the fourth annual Parkinson’s Disease Health Fair and Parkinson’s Awareness Days. Since 2019, our lab has partnered with St. Luke’s and Dr. Shah to host brain health seminars and fairs aimed at empowering the community with knowledge to manage and prevent neurological disorders. At this event, our lab’s book PD Movers, which showcases the stories of Black and Brown persons with Parkinson and their journeys, was distributed and is also available for download here
Community work
In this video, Nia Toomer-Mensah, who at the time was a PhD candidate in the Neurorehab Lab, shares her dedication to advancing early detection of Parkinson's disease in Brown and Black communities and developing brain health initiatives. She also discusses her work in Ghana, where she provides vital rehabilitation services to children with special needs, ensuring they have the tools and support to engage with their communities.
