Lori Quinn: Racial Disparities in Engagement of Ethnic Minorities with Parkinson’s Disease

Lori Quinn, Professor of Movement Sciences and Kinesiology at Teachers College, is addressing racial disparities in Parkinson disease care and research. In collaboration with Dr. Hiral Shaw from Columbia University and Anita Parker from St. Luke’s AME Church. The research team used a community-based approach to identify barriers. This initiative includes focus groups, educational series, and annual health fairs, fostering trust and engagement within Black and Brown communities. One key highlight includes a PD Mover's storybook featuring empowering personal journeys of Black individuals with Parkinson’s disease, raising awareness, and providing education.

Talk: Priming Motor Learning through Exercise in Those with Cerebellar Ataxia: A Pilot Study

Chelsea Macpherson describes the potential of priming motor learning through exercise in individuals with Cerebellar Ataxia. The study investigates the feasibility and reliability of a remotely delivered 8-week high-intensity exercise intervention, combining interval training with balance exercises. By leveraging wearable technology and remote delivery, the study aims to enhance motor performance and assess clinical outcomes in this population. The research holds promise for improving physical function and slowing disease progression in individuals with spinocerebellar ataxias (SCAs). This presentation was part of Neuromatch Conference 3.0, October 2020.
