About the Bilingual Extension Institute

Over the last two decades, more than 600 bilingual speech-language pathologists have successfully completed the Teachers College Bilingual Extension Institute, directed by Professor Catherine Crowley. Taught by an eight-person faculty and seven master clinicians, the Institute’s Advanced Certificate in Bilingual Speech-Language Pathology is designed to provide students with the knowledge and clinical skills needed to provide culturally and linguistically appropriate services for children and adolescents. The program extends the knowledge gained at a speech language graduate program or related grad program.

Students may complete the Advanced Certificate online or on-campus at Teachers College, Columbia University in New York City.*

Benefits of the Advanced Certificate in Bilingual Speech-Language Pathology

Discipline-specific bilingual extension certificate program

This Institute is discipline-specific for bilingual speech-language pathologists working in the field who have a master’s degree program in speech-language pathology, or who have a master’s in another area and are working under their Teachers of Students with Speech and Language Disabilities (TSLD) or Teacher of Speech and Hearing Handicapped (TSHH) certificates. Students will gain the training to work professionally without needing to enroll in a full speech language pathology graduate program.

Bridging the gap between research and application

Speech-language pathologists evaluate bilingual and culturally diverse children who are having linguistic and/or academic difficulties. As a result, speech-language pathologists are making the crucial diagnosis between a disorder and something else. In the Institute, students acquire the skills to analyze the particular needs of bilingual children with disabilities to meet their full potential academically. The program complements learning from a speech pathology degree or related graduate program with the application of contemporary best practices in SLP.

Gain the knowledge and skills to provide quality services

Students will collaborate and engage with Dr. Crowley and her team of experts in bilingual speech-language pathology, and also receive access to a robust library of media resources that enhance their learning experience. Students will graduate from the program with a mastery of how to teach language to children.

Program Details

The Advanced Certificate provides six graduate-level credits from Teachers College, Columbia University. The program is divided into two parts, each consisting of two three-credit courses.

For holders of the New York State Education Department (NYSED) Teachers of Students with Speech and Language Disabilities (TSSLD) or Teacher of Speech and Hearing Handicapped (TSHH) certificates, the Bilingual Extension Institute fulfills all requirements of the NYSED, except for the NYSED BEA, the language proficiency test.

Students who complete the Institute meet the requirements for the Teachers College Columbia University Advanced Certificate in Bilingual SLP. Those students who want the NYSED bilingual extension certificate must also hold the “base certificate” (the TSSLD or TSHH), pass the NYSED Bilingual Education Assessment and apply through the TC Office of Teacher Certification.

The Online Institute allows students to take advantage of a flexible, asynchronous format, with opportunities for live access for bilingual SLPs. The first three-credit course of the online Institute runs from May 10th until August 2nd and the second three-credit course begins on September 1st and finishes on November 23rd.

The On-Campus Institute meets at Teachers College, Columbia University in New York City one weekend a month in May, June, September, October, November, and December.*

The 2021 dates for the on-campus Institute are:

The on-campus Institute meets on Fridays 6-8:30, Saturdays 9-4 and Sundays 9:30-3.

*In response to the unprecedented events related to COVID-19, while the on-campus bilingual SLP extension institute is still being offered, it will initially—and temporarily—occur synchronically during the weekends as scheduled but in a virtual format. Consistent with the determination of Teachers College Columbia as to when it is appropriate to have on campus courses, the in-person institute will resume in the live weekend on campus format.

Student Testimonials

“I feel my confidence in working with multilingual students during service delivery, as well as advocating for students during the IEP/evaluation process, has increased significantly. I now feel I have the resources and research to reinforce the ideas and approaches that I am using. Before the Institute, I had a solid basis of information and experience, but now I have the confidence and resources to back my ideas up when working with families and colleagues.”
