DLL members and alumni were strongly represented at the 2018 ASHA Convention in Boston Massachusetts November 15th-17th. Dr. Carol Scheffner-Hammer, doctoral student Johanna Hokenson, post-doctoral fellow Dr. Bethany Keffala, and lab alumni Dr. Danna Bitetti, Dr. Lauren Cycyck, and Dr. Shelley Scarpino presented the following poster sessions and paper seminars:

Please join us in welcoming our new post doctoral fellow, Dr. Kelly Escobar, to the DLL Lab! Dr. Escobar completed her PhD in developmental psychology at New York University. She began her post doctoral fellowship under Dr. Carol Scheffner Hammer at Teachers College, Columbia University in May 2019.

Poster presentations and seminar topics included bilingualism, early language development, phonological awareness, code-switching, language instruction, international service, and pursing a PhD in communication sciences and disorders.

DLL Welcomes Two New Doctoral Students

The DLL Lab acquired two new doctoral students starting in the Fall 2018 semester. Julie Smith and Ayah Sindi will be completing their PhD in Communication Sciences and Disorders under the mentorship of Dr. Carol Scheffner-Hammer.

Dr. Bethany Keffala's recently published study in the International Journal of Bilingualism is now available online.
"This study investigated whether language-specific syllable type frequency and complexity exerted cross-language influence on Spanish–English bilingual children’s acquisition of syllable structure. This is the first study to show that exposure to patterns of linguistic complexity specific to each language can accelerate bilinguals’ acquisition of phonological structure in both languages."
