From evidence to practice: Implementing strategies for dual language learners in the preschool classroom.

This session describes specific strategies for promoting both English and home language development in preschool dual language learners (DLLs). Using examples from a preschool teacher coaching program, this session further discusses important student and teacher considerations for successfully incorporating DLL strategies into daily classroom practices. Specific topics include individualizing strategies for DLLs with diverse language abilities, tailoring practices to teachers’ different classroom roles and language proficiencies, integrating strategies and curriculum in lesson planning, and collaborating with families to facilitate language learning and communication in the classroom.

This session describes an evidence-based professional development (PD) program that trains preschool and kindergarten teachers to promote English learners’ language and early literacy skills in English and children’s home languages. In addition to presenting the design of the PD program, which includes on-line learning modules and remote coaching, the session shares key strategies that are targeted throughout the PD including, but not limited to, building vocabulary knowledge, using children’s home language skills to promote their English language skills, facilitating conversations to promote oral language skills, and book reading strategies. Feedback from teachers about the effectiveness of the PD be discussed.
