100 years of Paulo Freire: Annual Conference

Gilberto Gil is a Brazilian singer and songwriter, known for both his musical innovation and political activism. From 2003 to 2008, he served as Brazil's Minister of Culture.

Fernando Haddad is a Brazilian academic and politician who served as Mayor of São Paulo from 2013 to 2017 and former Minister of Education in Brazil from 2005 to 2012. He is also a professor at the University of São Paulo (USP).

Acadêmico e político brasileiro que serviu como Prefeito da cidade de São Paulo de 2013 a 2017. Também foi Ministro da Educação durante o período de 2005 a 2012 e hoje é professor da Universidade de São Paulo (USP).

Gloria Ladson-Billings serves as a Professor in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction and faculty affiliate in the Department of Educational Policy Studies at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. Her research examines the pedagogical practices of teachers who are successful with African American students.  From 2005 to 2006 she was the president of the American Educational Research Association (AERA).

Carlos Alberto Torres is a Political sociologist of education who serves as a Distinguished Professor of Social Sciences and Comparative Education at UCLA. He is also the director of the Paulo Freire Institute at the UCLA Graduate School of Education. His current research examines the political sociology of education, focusing on the cultural organizational contexts of learning and the tensions resulting from the dialectics of the global and the local in cultural creation in the social sciences.

Luiza Cortesão serves as an Emeritus Professor at University of Porto and as a senior researcher at the Centre for Research and Intervention in Education (CIIE). Her main interests in research lie in intercultural issues and Freirean studies, academic excellence and citizenship, adult education and action-research. Dr. Cortesão is also the president of Instituto Paulo Freire de Portugal (Paulo Freire’s Institute of Portugal). 

Luiza Cortesão é professora Emérita na Universidade do Porto e pesquisadora sênior no Centre for Research and Intervention in Education (CIIE). Seus principais interesses em pesquisa estão em questões interculturais e estudos freirianos, excelência acadêmica e cidadania, educação de adultos e pesquisa-ação. A Dra. Leôncio Soares is a full Professor at Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG). His research focuses on education public policies and youth and adult education. He is also a currently visiting scholar at the University of Lisboa.

Paulo Blikstein is an Associate Professor at Teachers College and an Affiliate Associate Professor of Computer Science at Columbia University. He directs the Transformative Learning Technologies Lab and his research examines how new technologies can deeply transform learning.

Sergio Vaz,  author of eight poetry books, has been making changes in the suburbs of São Paulo through literature, poetry and culture. He is the cofounder of Cooperifa soiree, a cultural movement that transformed a bar in the suburbs of São Paulo into a cultural center to foster literature and poetry. He has been honored in several prizes for his work and elected, in 2009, one of the 100 most important brazilians by Época Magazine.

Sergio Vaz, autor de oito livros, vem transformando as periferias de São Paulo através da literatura, cultura e poesia. É um dos cofundadores do sarau Cooperifa, um movimento cultural que transformou um bar na periferia de São Paulo em um centro cultural para deflagrar literatura e poesia. Recebeu homenagem em diversos prêmios por seu trabalho e em 2009 foi eleito um dos 100 brasileiros mais importantes pela revista Época. 

Cristiano Burlan (Porto Alegre, Brazil, 1975) is a film and theater director and professor. He has directed more than 20 films, including Tetralogy in Black and White, comprising the films "Symphony of a Lonely Man" (2012), "Amateur" (2014), "Hamlet" (2014) and "Hunger" (2015), awarded at the Brasilia Festival of Brazilian Cinema. His documentary "They Killed My Brother" (2013) was the winner of the É Tudo Verdade Festival 2013 and, in the same year, won the award from the official jury and critics at the 40th SESC Best Films Festival and the Governor of the State of São Paulo Award for Culture. "Before the End" (2017) won the APCA's Special Jury Prize in 2018, the year it also premiered "Elegy of a crime" (2018) at the É Tudo Verdade Festival, winning awards. The films "Construction," "They Killed my Brother," and "Elegy of a crime" make up the Grief Trilogy, in which he addresses the tragic story of his family. In 2020, the series "Paulo Freire, a man of the world" premiered by SescTV. His new fiction feature film, "The Mother," starring Marcélia Cartaxo, is being finalized.

Cristiano Burlan (Porto Alegre, Brasil, 1975) é diretor de cinema e teatro e professor. Realizou mais de 20 filmes, entre eles a Tetralogia em Preto e Branco, composta pelos filmes "Sinfonia de um Homem Só" (2012), "Amador" (2014), "Hamlet" (2014) e "Fome" (2015), premiado no Festival de Brasília do Cinema Brasileiro. Seu documentário "Mataram Meu Irmão" (2013) foi o vencedor do Festival É Tudo Verdade 2013 e, no mesmo ano, ganhou o prêmio do júri oficial e da crítica no 40º Festival Sesc de Melhores Filmes e o prêmio Governador do Estado de São Paulo para a Cultura.  "Antes do Fim" (2017) venceu o prêmio especial do júri da APCA em 2018, ano em que também estreou "Elegia de um Crime" (2018), no Festival É Tudo Verdade angariando prêmios. Os filmes "Construção", "Mataram meu irmão" e "Elegia de um crime" compõem a Trilogia do Luto, em que aborda a trágica história de sua família. Em 2020, estreou a série "Paulo Freire, um homem do mundo” realizada pelo SescTV. Está em finalização de seu novo longa-metragem de ficção, "A Mãe", que tem como protagonista a atriz Marcélia Cartaxo.
