Welcome to the Comparative and International Education & International Educational Development Programs website!

Welcome!

Teachers College has a long, exciting history of Comparative Education, dating back to 1899 when the college developed the first graduate program in the field in the United States. This academic year we will be furthering that history as host of the 52nd Comparative and International Education Society (CIES) Annual Meeting, "Gaining Educational Equity Around the World." It will be held March 17-21, 2008, under the leadership of CIES President-Elect Dr. Henry Levin. We look forward to you joining us for what promises to be an exciting week of dialogue and debate on significant issues in our field.

It is my pleasure to return to Teachers College after my sabbatical in during the 2006-07 academic year. We have said goodbye to Dr. Fida Adely, who has joined the faculty of Georgetown University, and Dr. Aleesha Taylor, who is now Senior Program Manager of the Education Support Program of the Open Society Foundation in London. We wish them well and thank them for their service to our department. This academic year, Dr. Jo Anne Kleifgen is on sabbatical, but we are joined by several new faculty members: Dr. Regina Cortina, who will be a permanent member of the CIE/IED programs, and Mr. Reza Arjmand, who will be with us for two years in the position formerly occupied by Dr. Adely. We also have a number of distinguished professors offering courses for us, including Dr. Leonisa Ardizzone, Dr. Norma Nemeh, Dr. Yuko Nonoyama-Tarumi, Dr. Andrew Okolie, and Ms. Rebecca Winthrop. I hope you will join me in welcoming them to our programs. In addition to the new faculty members, we have a new program assistant, Annie Smiley, who is working hard to insure the office runs as smoothly as it did last year under Cambria Russell's leadership. We also have a new master's student peer advisor, Zeena Zakharia, who will be working with new and continuing students on their integrated projects and related matters.

Whether you are a new or continuing student, prospective applicant, or interested visitor, I invite you to explore our program website, peruse the profiles of our current doctoral students, and attend an event of one of our student organizations or affiliated centers.

Professor Fran Vavrus, Program Coordinator
