Writers' Workshop scores Biggest Gains

For School Supt. Irene Cornish, the writing program's success proves that raising students' test scores is possible and points the way to achieving that end.

The methodology and training derives from the Writers' Workshop, produced by the Teachers College Reading and Writing Project program at Columbia University.

Moreover, it fit into a series of lessons that built the students' writing proficiency by approaching the goal from several angles. That's different from the old method of teaching to the writing prompts, which tended to drill a particular angle exclusively, focusing on narration in the third and fourth grades, exposition in the fifth grade and persuasion in the sixth grade.
