Documentary on 'The 99' Airs at Lincoln Center

WHAM! BAM! ISLAM!, a nearly-completed documentary about TC alumnus Naif Al-Mutawa and his comic book series, "The 99", will be given a preliminary screening at Lincoln Center's Walter Reade Theater this Thursday evening, May 7th, at 8 pm. Characters from "The 99" grace the cover of the spring 2009 issue of TC Today magazine, and a story about Al-Mutawa appears inside.
WHAM! BAM! ISLAM!, a nearly-completed documentary about TC alumnus Naif Al-Mutawa and his comic book series, “The 99”, will be given a preliminary screening at Lincoln Center’s Walter Reade Theater this Thursday evening, May 7th, at 8 pm. Characters from “The 99” grace the cover of the spring 2009 issue of TC Today magazine, and a story about Al-Mutawa appears inside.
In his promotion for the documentary, WHAM! BAM! ISLAM! filmmaker Isaac Solotaroff describes his creation asthe story of Naif Al-Mutawa and “The 99”-- the first comic book rooted in Islamic history and culture.  Since its launch in 2006, “The 99” has been both an international media sensation and a lightening rod for controversy.  An intimate look at an entrepreneur and his daring venture to build a new pop-culture for young Muslims, WHAM! BAM! ISLAM! examines the shifting definitions of the sacred and the secular across the Islamic world at the dawn of the 21st century.”
