Abramo receives Outstanding Emerging Researcher Award

Music Program graduate Joseph Abramo, Ed.D. has received the Outstanding Emerging Researcher Award from The Center for Music Education Research. This award, presented at the Suncoast Music Education Research Symposium at the University of South Florida, honors music education researchers at the early stages of their careers. As a benefit of this award, Joseph will present new research at the Symposium, which will be published in the journal Music Education Research International. For the full article, click here.


Alexander receives Legion of Honor Medal

Dr. Richard Alexander (left) was recently awarded the Legion of Honor medal by the consul general of France for his efforts during World War II. Pascal Le Deunff, consul general of France in Atlanta, presented the medal to Alexander, along with five others, "in order to express France's eternal gratitude for those who liberated it from oppression from 1944-45," according to a news release from the Consulate General of France.

Alexander received the award in recognition of his courage. The Normandy landings were among the heroic deeds that were mentioned at the ceremony.

Kenneth J. Smith, Ph.D., works at Sunset Ridge School District 29 in Northfield, IL, a suburb of Chicago. He currently runs the district-wide enrichment program. In 1995, Ken earned his Ph.D. in cognitive psychology. He was an American Memories fellow for the Library of Congress, and his articles have appeared in The Middle School Journal and Gifted Child Today.

Welcome to the January edition of the TC Alumni Newsletter.

Mark Your Calendar for April 16, 2011.
Academic Festival 2011, our annual homecoming, is a true celebration of the rich intellectual traditions, past and present, which make TC the nation's leading school of education. Academic Festival features a star-studded lineup of faculty and alumni speakers from all disciplines during concurrent break-out sessions, as well as a Keynote Address -- all with an eye towards wellness.

We are excited to announce our 2011 Keynote Speaker Dr. Ian Smith. Smith is the creator and founder of "The 50 Million Pound Challenge" and is currently the medical/diet expert on VH1's "The Celebrity Fit Club" and a medical contributor on "Rachael Ray." He also hosts "HealthWatch," on American Urban Radio Networks. Smith is the author of six books, and he will speak about behaviors that can make an impact on your health and happiness.

The Distinguished Alumni Award Recipients will also be honored during the Luncheon and there will be countless opportunities for alumni networking throughout the day. More information is coming soon. Come hear debut author, Maya Soetoro-Ng, sister of President Barack Obama, present a lyrical story relaying the loving wisdom of her late mother to a young granddaughter she never met. Maya Soetoro-Ng was born in Jakarta, Indonesia, and is a writer and educator with a PhD in international comparative education. She says Ladder to the Moon was inspired by her young daughter Suhaila's questions about her grandmother Ann Dunham. Ann Dunham is mother to Maya as well as our forty-fourth president, Barack Obama.
