James Comer

James Comer

Teachers College Trustee James P. Comer, M.D., is Maurice Falk Professor of Child Psychiatry at the Yale Child Study Center and Associate Dean of the Yale School of Medicine. He is the founder of the Yale School Development Program. 

Comer is internationally known for his creation in 1968 of the Comer School Development Program, now viewed as the forerunner of most modern school reform efforts. His 10 books include Maggie's American DreamLeave No Child Behind and, most recently What I Learned In School: Reflections on Race, Child Development and School Reform.

Comer is a co-founder and past President of the Black Psychiatrists of America. He was a consultant to Children's Television Workshop, and has been a consultant, committee member, advisory board member and trustee to numerous local and national organizations serving children. He co-chaired an NCATE National Expert Panel on Increasing the Application of Knowledge About Child and Adolescent Development in Educator Preparation Programs. 

Comer has received numerous awards, including the Harold W. McGraw, Jr. Prize in Education, the Charles A. Dana Award for pioneering Achievement in Education, and University of Louisville 0207 Grawemeyer Award for Education.He holds 47 honorary degrees and is a member of both the Institute of Medicine and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
