Movement Science and Education

Welcome to the Movement Science & Education program

The Movement Science & Education program approaches the study of movement from a multi-disciplinary perspective. Our focus is on the practical applications of science and theory in the laboratory, clinic, school and community and our students gain hands-on experience putting research into practice. Coursework emphasizes the scientific and theoretical core of physiology, behavioral science, neural bases of movement control, and pedagogy. We have long been a pioneer in the field of movement science and our doctoral programs are among the best in the nation.

The Movement Sciences program offers two concentrations at the masters degree level. Motor Learning and Control and Applied Physiology.  Motor Learning and control focuses on the study of behavioral, biomechanical and neural bases of development, acquisition and performance of functional movement skills. Applied Physiology focuses on the physiological effects of exercise and disease and on the promotion of physical activity. The Applied Physiology concentration also offers an MS degree in Exercise Physiology and Nutrition.

Motor Learning & Control

Motor Learning focuses on the behavioral, biomechanical, and neural bases of development, acquisition, and performance of functional movement skills.

Applied Exercise Physiology

This program focuses on the physiological effects of exercise and disease and on the promotion of physical activity across both healthy and disabled populations. The effects of exercise training on physiological processes, health, and physical well being are emphasized throughout the curriculum.

The Movement Sciences program offers both an EdD and PhD.  Both programs are 75 credits. The EdD degree can be completed part time or full time and have concentrations in Motor Learning and Control, Applied Physiology, Physical Therapy and Occupational Therapy.  Physical and occupational therapy concentrations are joint programs offered in collaboration with faculty at Columbia University’s Physical and Occupational Therapy programs. Only students with entry-level physical or occupational therapy degrees from accredited institutions are eligible for these concentrations. PhD degrees require full time commitment and have more extensive research training requirements.

EdD in Movement Sciences and Education (4 concentrations)

PhD in Kinesiology (2 concentrations)
