TC Program: EdM in School Counseling
Research and Scholarly Interests: “My research interests revolve around the application of school counseling systems in China, inspired by my firsthand experience working in both China and the U.S. In the U.S., a typical counselor-to-student ratio is around 1:200, which allows for more personalized support. However, in China, that ratio can balloon to 1:1500, making it almost impossible to provide adequate counseling services. Teachers, too, face overwhelming demands, often managing classrooms of 50 students and working 12-hour days while wearing multiple hats—counselor, parent liaison, crisis manager, and administrative assistant. What really drives my research is the question of how we can balance resources effectively in such high-pressure environments. I am excited about the potential impact this research can have on improving school systems in China and beyond.”

Both countries have extensive outdoor education programs that are well-integrated into mainstream education and are particularly well connected with the lands’ Indigenous tribes and native populations. The universities in both Australia and New Zealand are top producers of research in the fields of outdoor education and experiential learning, and I am curious to learn more about how the United States–among other countries, can learn from their research and education programs.”
